re: Don't sleep on Matt Campbell

Matt Campbell is 41 years old and he's essentially maxed out two programs. First at Toledo, and now at Iowa State. Campbell has been courted by both the Lions and the Jets in the NFL but turned both of them down, meaning he's a college coach who'd stick around if he got to a destination job like LSU.
Campbell's resume is undeniably solid. He doesn't need to be compared to anyone to recognize his worth. No matter who's hired there will be a set of fans pitching a fit but most should be happy if we get him.

He's pretty much the closest thing to a Jay Johnson hire on the board right now.
Campbell is the coach a pro AD would go and get. He'd certainly come for what O was making, he'd stabilize the program, he'd win with the talent on board and if he couldn't recruit five-star kids right away he'd feast on the underrated 3-star kids in Louisiana, the Russell Gages, Lloyd Cushenberrys, Justin Jeffersons and Foster Moreaus who end up in the NFL, until he did.
I expect that Campbell is the hire if Riley says no. Not because I have any sources on this, though a couple of contacts have said he's high on Woody's list, but because he makes a lot of sense.

This is how I see it too. I really hope he's the guy if it's not Riley. I'd be perfectly happy with Aranda, but it's undeniable that Campbell has a much more sustained track record of success and program building. Not a knock against Aranda, but Baylor was in pretty good shape when he got there.

I just don’t like where he said, his goal for his team was not to win the conference championship. That it was never a goal for his team ….

Not his best look, but I think he's just kind of maxed ISU out and they're not a program that is going to be able to sustain championship level success. So if it's not realistic to win a championship every year, he's got to find attainable goals for his team to strive for.
It was really just an awkward version of one of Saban's "process" rants.
Do you think the HC at Vanderbilt is talking to his team about winning the SEC? Or even the SEC east? There's no way that's a goal at a program like that. After 2 SEC games the goal is totally shot and then what?

Nah man, we aren’t watching the same games.
Purdy got benched for bad play each and every year. shite, I watched him get benched personally at the Iowa game.
Matt is a tremendous coach. Give him some talent, watch him shine.

IMO he would be a great hire. I do like Lincoln Riley but that seems pie in the sky. I would be just as happy with Campbell, he seems more all around solid while Riley excels at recruiting and offense.

Saban says the same thing. Get better everyday. The championships will take care of themselves.

Exactly my problem with Campbell - loses games he shouldn't. We're not looking for a 9 & 3 8 & 4 head coach. We want the next dynasty at LSU.

ISU's record:
2013: 3-9
2014: 2-10
2015: 3-9
2016: 3-9

The only reason you have any type of expectation for this program is because Matt Campbell raised the bar.
We are watching the ceiling of Ames, Iowa.

Which coach doesn't, not named Saban or this year Kirby. Aranda lost to a terrible TCU team. Oklahoma does every year. I guess Napier hasn't in a while. This unicorn doesn't exist.
Matt Cambell is my favorite over everybody. Would kill with LSU resources and in state recruits. Also can get us the midwest o linemen. He would instantly be the best x' and o's guy in the SEC...yeah even over Saban.

Aranda, Campbell or Riley, doesn't really matter to me. 1a 1b 1c imo no particular order. frick BoB btw

What's the deal with them giving him shite about his presser the other day?

Wait this guy is from Iowa?

Aranda, on the other hand, has consistently put out elite defenses for a decade
You must have a different definition of elite than many of us. He didn’t have 1 elite defense at LSU. He had good defenses at LSU. The 2019 defense may have been elite for one-third of that 15-game season.

You have to wonder if he is even interested in moving on from Iowa. Seems he would have moved on to a bigger program already if he wanted to go that route. Might just be that him and his family are just very happy where they're at and avoiding the turmoil of coaching at a program such as LSU

I'll sleep on anyone I like, thank you very much.
