Does past history relate to future success? Josh Pate doesn’t believe so…

Pate on Jimbo/aTm

Non-aTm Fans: “the reason Jimbo didn’t succeed there is because aTm hasn’t succeeded at anything.”

Josh Pate: “Imagine if Kirby Smart was the head coach of aTm.”

Which one is right?

Both texas and A&M suffer from having too many cooks in the kitchen as far as meddling admin and boosters

It has always plagued them both.

Texas has one national championship since DKR retired over 50 years ago. They've only won the Big XII three times since the conference was formed.

Bear Bryant and Gene Stallings each struggled at A&M, and RC Slocum's best years were when the SWC was dying and Texas was down.

They've never lacked the resources to succeed, but there's a toxicity that festers around both programs, and it must keep coming from boosters and admins.

Is Texas now out of the woods with Steve Sarkisian?

Pate is right. It's hard to hire an elite coach who can maintain elite status and is a fit at said program. We see programs with more championship history go a decade or two before returning to championship status. A&M has just had a longer dry spell/hasn't hit on a great hire but they have everything in place to win.

And, I don't think A&M is like Texas. A&M seems way more patient with their head coaches.

They just haven't "hit on a hire" in 90 years?

It's who they are and who their program is run by.

A&M may hire a search firm for the first time basically ever … so maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks

There’s no reason you can’t win a national title at A&M in the era of Wild West NIL with the right coach.

The search firms are basically worthless and mostly cover your arse for the admin if the the due diligence is botched.

He’s wrong. Texas A&M wants to hire a Kirby Smart, when they should be trying to get a Mark Ritcht.
