Which side of the ball do you want the new head coach to be in charge of?

I prefer someone who has expertise on at least one side of the ball.

Our last two hires didn't bring that to the table.

Coach football is about the next coach you're going to pump up and the next one you plan on paying a huge buyout for.

I prefer a program builder who knows how to build it brick by brick from the ground up at every level. Xs and Os come after that happens.

Don’t have a preference bit I would like a guy who has called plays on one side and can take control if needed.

A guy who has at least been a coordinator at some point.

If we use Saban as the model head coach, defensive.

I think it is easier in this day and age to find a good OC. Even more importantly, it is easier to replace a good OC when he leaves.

I also think it is better to maintain defensive continuity than offensive continuity. A head coach who oversees and maintains defensive continuity is what I would want.

Offense, specifically a QB developer. Max, Nuss, and Walker Howard in your QB room.

Defensive minded coaches seem to have more success. I think they understand that having a good defense is crucial in building a great football program. Even Les was good at that.

Saban’s greatness came more from just unbelievable recruiting than just coaching.

His defenses have been so strong because he always has the most depth and elite players on defense.

I don't necessarily want a HC from one side of the other to run that side of things.

I've always preferred HC's be from the defensive side of the ball NOT because we need the expertise on that side but because it causes them to go find true experts to run the offense.

If Saban had roots on the offensive side he would have never broadened his horizons to new offenses. If Orgeron had an "offensive system" Brady never happens.

There's a fairly impressive list of coaches that come from the defensive side: Lou Holtz, Saban, Jimmy Johnson, Johnny Majors (both sides actually), Frank Beamer. They seem to have a helluva lot of staying power.

Having said that, I'm now a believer in offense wins championships. You still have to be good in defense, but you have to be great offensively. Not just good.

So the question becomes: Can a defensive HC bring in the right offensive coaches, CONSISTENTLY, to have staying power and win championships?

Of that list above, only one of those coached/coaches in the era of "offense wins championships" and that is, of course, Saban. And he had to personally change his views on the game as a whole and what offense he wanted to run. No other defensive minded head coach, including Orgeron, can do it consistently enough.

So the answer is an offensive minded HC... unless it is Saban.

These days it would have to be offensive. It is a cycle.

I prefer a HC with bold vision, process and capability to attract talent (coach n player) and inspire for excellence, one who is adaptive to today’s game on both sides of the ball.
