Why does everyone want him when his defenses were mediocre at UCLA?
Posted on 12/11/08 at 4:02 pm to tenderfoot tigah
i heard his defense was full of 2 star atheletes.held usc to 28 with 2 stars.that looks pretty good considering usc has 5 stars across the board.

Not everyone wants him.
But if the O would give the D at least enough time to get a drink of water before they have to get back on the field, His D would probably be alot better.

UCLA's defense is very good. Its their offense that is horrible.

His defenses have been solid with average talent.
He has a n.f.l. background as well. He's coached secondaries at the highest level.

and just think they put up 60 pts against Chavos and his defense

From what I've seen of UCLA, his teams are aggressive and very good tacklers.
I know the game I watched against USC in 2006 when they upset them was a fricking defensive masterpiece.

He's a good teacher, his players play hard and disciplined for him in addition to being a fantastic recruiter.

...and against BYU?

BYU comes to mind, but I think the prevaling thought is the talent level would be much higher for him at LSU. Probably waiting for word on west coach HC opportunities. He stands to position himself for a better HC job after several years as an LSU DC IMO (ala Pelini).

if you could name one good (or great, or mastermind) DC that hasn't given up a big score line multiple times, that thought would mean more

Showing that he performed well in one game is as meaningless as showing that he did not in one game.

except I didn't do this...(but if I were going to pwn you here I could point out many performances by his D)

There defense was ranked 113th in the year before Walker took over. Walker takes over and they were ranked 35th I believe. Not a bad change.

I love the idea that only the defenses' ranking is important. Not talent, competition, offensive production (time of possession), etc.
apparently, if we want a top 5 defense.....there is exactly 5 DCs from which we may choose (by definition).

Which is why I didn't reply to you...but to the guy who pointed out that he "only" gave up 28 points against USC.

I'm sorry to tell ya...but statistics do mean something.
UCLA's defense gave up 29 pts/game (LSU's 25.9 pts/game).
UCLA's defense gave up 337 yds/game (LSU's 326 yds/game).
Sorry, Walker doesn't impress me. He coaches in an inferior conference too.

And if Saban were at UW this season, they would have given up a ton of points. Would not mean Saban is a bad defensive coach.
