You don’t shell out that type of money for just a defensive coordinator. You shell out that type of money for someone who you view as head coach material and vital to the program’s success. I think Alleva and the powers that be realized how much they fricked up with the O hire, but also realized what they have with Aranda.

By locking him down, they already have a contingency plan for when O inevitably fails. For as much shite as I’ve given the AD, this could prove to be a deft move.

100% agree! Aranda is the future. We all know how well Joe conducts coaching searches. He already has O's replacement in house, and i am actually happy about the next coach.

Yep! No way that contract would have been done without "future plans" for DA

Does this mean the narrative of him wanting to be an NFL defensive coordinator and not a head coach isn't true?

Isn’t Aranda already “Associate HC”? Wish we’d just drop the Associate part right now

You shell that out for the best coordinator and prevents him from traveling west 350 miles. Keeps you from having to face the best D coordinator every year. Money well spent. Read into it and try to spin it whatever way you want.

When his new contract comes out, look for words “right of first refusal”. If they are there carefully written it means he is essentially the head coach in waiting.. or it’s his decision on whether or not he wants it..

Agreed. Obviously aranda is unproven on the HC level. But his attention to detail and process make a me think he will be really good.

And you know the defense will be good every year at least.

The more I think about it, aranda reminds me of a defensive minded chris Petersen.

Love the fact that his contract is longer than O's

I believe this too. I think they are hoping to let O go when his contract runs out, that is if he doesn't F up before then.

Aranda is comparable to Kirby Smart.

Both are DCs who didn’t have HC experience.

Smart has his team playing for a NC in his second year, with a freshman QB!

Agree 100%. If Aranda stays long enough he will take over once O is canned in 2 or 3 years

that tells you all you need to know. When do you ever hear about a coordinator being locked in longer than the head man

You may be right. But Aranda leaving yesterday would have been shite show the likes of which we haven't seen since...

It's not. Unfortunately O was given a five year deal, of which four remain.

I think, at least I hope, Alleva's plan all along was to have Aranda as the Head Coach one day. Why else would he cause this shite show to happen? Obviously, this happened sooner than he thought with aTm going after Aranda.

$2.5M a year means Aranda isn't going anywhere and if that was Alleva's plan all along I can respect him a little bit. Hiring someone like Fisher or Herman means Aranda is all but solidified to get a Head Coaching gig somewhere else.

I hate it when people say someone is unproven as a head coach. At some point, every head coach is unproven.

I just wish we could make the switch now because I think Dave Aranda is the next big thing and LSU is damn lucky to be in this position.

Aranda’s intelligence, attention to detail, push for excellence, obsession with football ... does that remind anyone of another SEC coach? And I don’t care if he has head coaching experience.

Are you sure? I could have sworn it was for 3 years.

Regardless, I think this deal had a lot to do with the fact that Orgeron advocated to Alleva and the others that Dave was essential to the program, and common sense would dictate that Orgeron is so desperate to be relevant that he would probably give half his salary to Dave, because Aranda's excellence masks the ungodly amount of deficiencies O has as a head coach.

Unfortunately it is a five year deal, but I believe this coming season is a put up or shut up year for him. With Aranda locked in, if O shits the bed next season his buyout will be significantly lower and LSU will be in a position to move on from him while retaining the most important cog in the wheel and hopefully salvaging what they can from the 2019 recruiting class.
