Daronte had LSU ready to play. He’s not going enough to be a DC at this level but OP’s premise is he will be one day so Aranda is the perfect HC to train under. It’s not that outlandish.

The defense did it's job. Sure a couple of hiccups but Peetz lost this game. Letting Max Johnson throw the ball at the end if the half was the dumbest call I've ever seen. Even announcers called it. We win that game. We would be up 14-13 and would kick FG and not go for a TD. Coach O and Peetz lost that game

So he becomes DC in name only for 1.6 million or demoted to safeties coach for 1.6 mill and Ron Roberts is DC for 900k?

Dont pump Daronte when the Bama failure last night was solely on BOB. And we lost anyway

Next week, when he is getting abused by Briles, I promise I'll bump this for you to reflect on

No one is suggesting he be forced on Aranda.

Just the fact they are friends and have coached together opens the possibility that Aranda may consider retaining him if he is hired.

His boss has the IQ of a glass of warm water but think he's smarter than Dave Aranda. Don't blame him for that.

I have a family member that lives next door to one of the coaches. Apparently Ed has been micromanaging the D all season. Jones was given the green light the last 2 weeks to call the D.

O just needs to stay out of DJs way and let the man call the defense

And let him pack for his next gig.

It was one game people , one game. An un-motivated Bama against talented young players, playing with pride, some getting a chance to shine.

Suddenly he can coach? Where was he before yesterday while LSU's D ranked 75th?

Nope, let him pad his resume' somewhere else.

Jones had a solid game plan put together. Is that from the extra week? Did Bama play to their potential?

The difference was that the defensive line played like men, and the coaches had the linebackers moving forward. The d line had shown flashes this year, but that is the first time I remember the lbers playing that way.

Very glad to have seen Mike Jones play significant plays…finally.

Renegotiate the salary and see if he wants the arrangement where he’s a less empowered DC under Aranda learning on the job. Not a safeties coach. His other option is to uproot and move back to the NFL because no other college will pay him half of what he’s making today.

Meh when the opt out players decide they don't want to learn an actual scheme or be fussed at they'll try to get a revolt through Daronte and ask for his simple jack junior high defense back. There's no way he stays on that's not a mess.

One good game, that is it. One good game. UCLA abused us. Florida Abused us. Ole Miss, Kentucky all abused us. The guy was a DC at a D-II school for 4 years and hasn't sniffed a DC job for last 13 years until Shrimp boat hired him. There is a reason for that.

The defense has gradually improved despite the injuries. I have no problem if he is retained.

Daronte has done a good job all season, honestly. People forget that the early struggles on defense have a few mitigating factors. One is that the team was learning its 3rd scheme in 3 years (Aranda, Pelini, Jones). The other is that the players were simply missing tackles or overrunning their responsibilities. That's not a DC issue as much as it is the outcome of that first point ... the players were still processing the new scheme and not playing as quickly from a mental standpoint. As that locked in, the scheme has tightened and the team has been pretty good. Daronte Jones has also had to work with an unprecedented amount of backups getting key time due to injuries. Overall, he and the defensive staff have done well. The offensive staff has been more the issue, honestly.

I agree but how much of that was Ed dictating the defensive strategy and calls earlier in the season? That’s the real question that needs to be answered

Does anyone else think that if Jones just goes to another team for a couple years as a positional coach or co-DC where there is an established guy (like UGA, Bama, Baylor, etc.), he could come out in a few years as a legitimately elite DC candidate?

I don't see anything that would make me think he can be elite. What have you seen him do well to make you think he could be elite?

quote:

Jones seems to have a good understanding of game planning and has shown versatility over the year

Versatility? Are you retarded? Even Orgeron just last week said we are too predictable. Orgeron. He's been anything but versatile.

I can't say it's impossible for him to end up being a good DC. I CAN say that he isn't ready and that he was unable to identify the style of play that would have been optimal for this team and talent.

He lucked into a gameplan for Bama with a lot of blitzing (simply because that's what A&M did). It opened a lot of eyes...maybe even his own. That shouldn't happen in week 9. It's inexcusable to happen in week 9 when you had Stingley, Ricks, and Flott in your secondary.

WE ABSOLUTELY PLAYED AGAINST OUR STRENGTHS AND INTO OUR WEAKNESS.

Sorry, but that's the mark of a bad coach, not an elite one.
