Agreed. Seems like most people have an opinion as to Chavis vs. Walker. I'm leanning to Chavis because with the talent and offensive coaches we have at LSU, I feel it is wise to make the "safer" selection which I perceive to be Chavis. I think we will likely compete for BCS Champ again soon either way.

Just my opinion. Thanks for the rivals link.

I wish DM and BDP good luck and I think we will be much improved either way.

Looking forward to next year!

are you joking? Muschamp hasn't even sniffed the success Pelini had as a DC, either statistically or on the field.

I'll take Chavis over Walker...easy decision.

The word "aggressive" is always used when describing Walker's coaching philosophy... that's all these folks need to hear and they're suddenly in love with the guy. He doesn't need to prove it on the field...just say "aggressive" and they love him. Never mind that his defense allowed more points, more yards, had fewer sacks, and a poorer 3rd down conversion rate than LSU's in '08. And he's supposed to improve our defense?!?!

One great USC game does not make a great DC.

Let's take a look....

Pelini was 56-10 in 5 seasons as a DC for Nebraska, OU, and LSU. That's a winning percentage of .848, by my calculations. That includes one Big 12 title, one SEC title and a BCS title.

Muschamp is 61-16 as a DC at LSU, AU, and UT in 6 seasons. That's a winning percentage of .792, by my calculations. That includes an SEC title and a BCS title.

Let's look at some of the basic stats......

Bo's lone season at Nebraska:

They finished #11 in total defense, and gave up 3, 863 yards on 875 plays, gave up an average of 297 yards/game and 4.41 yards/play. They finished #2 in scoring defense and gave up 24 TD's and 188 points on the year(special teams included) for 14 points/game in 13 games.

Bo's lone season at OU:

Finished 13th in total defense, gave up 3,887 yards on 812 plays, gave up an average of 299 yards/game and 4.79 yards/play. OU finished that year #11 in scoring defense and gave up 28 td's and 219 points(special teams included) for an average of 16 points/game in 13 games.

In 2005 at LSU:

We finished #3 in total defense, gave up 3,469 yards all year on 833 plays and gave up an average of 266 yards/game and 4.16 yards/play. We finished #3 in scoring defense, gave up 21 TD's and 185 points(special teams included) for 14.2 points/game in 13 games.

In 2006 at LSU:

We finished again at #3 in total defense, gave up 3,156 on 764 plays, gave up an average of 242 yards/game and 4.1 yards/play. We finished #4 in scoring defense, gave up 20 TD's and 164 points(special teams included) for an average of 12 points/game in 13 games.

In 2007 at LSU;

We finished #3 in total defense and gave up 4, 043 yards on the year on 915 plays for 288 yards/game and 4.4 yards/play. We finished #17 in scoring defense, gave up 35 TD's and 270 points(special teams included) for an average of 19 points/game in 14 games.

Muschamp in 2002 at LSU:

We finished #8 in total defense, gave up 3,728 yards on 825 plays for an average of 286 yards/game and 4.5 yards/play. We finished #15 in scoring defense, gave up 30 TD's and 238 points(special teams included) for an average of 18 points/game in 13 games.

In 2003 at LSU:

We finished #1 in total defense, gave up 3,528 yards for an average of 252 points/game and 4.0 yards/play. We finished #1 in scoring defense, gave up 19 TD's and 154 points(special teams included and I think one Mauck pick 6) for an average of 11 points/game in 14 games.

In 2004 at LSU:

We finished #3 in total defense, gave up 3,083 yards on 743 plays for an average of 256 yards/game and 4.1 yards/play. We finished #14 in scoring defense, gave up 25 TD's and 205 points(special teams included) for an average of 17 points/game in 12 games.

In 2006 at AU:

They finished #19 in total defense, gave up 3,800 yards on 773 plays for an average of 292 yards/game and 4.9 yards/play. They finished #7 in scoring defense, gave up 22 TD's and 181 points(special teams included) for an average of 13 points/game in 13 games.

In 2007 at AU:

They finished #6 in total defense, gave up 3,873 yards on 855 plays for an average of 297 yards/game and 4.5 yards/play. They finished #6 in scoring defense, gave up 25 TD's and 220 points on the year(special teams included) for an average of 16 points/game in 13 games.

This year at UT;

They are ranked currently at #50 in total defense, have given up 4, 079 yards on 783 plays for an average of 339 yards/game and 5.2 yards/play. They are ranked #20 in scoring defense, have given up 27 TD's and 223 points(special teams included and 6 of those points are from a McCoy pick 6) for an average of 18 points/game.

**some of those scoring defense stats such as total points may have more pick 6's or fumble recoveries picked up and returned for TD's in there that I know but I'm too lazy to go through each box score to find out.

FWIW, I'm not making a case that Muschamp is better than Pelini. But I think your statement that he hasn't "sniffed" the success Pelini has had is a reach/exxageration.

But, just throwing stats and win-loss records out there doesn't tell the entire story of either coaches abilities.

Both are good defensive coaches. But, you are incorrect when you keep saying Saban "ran" the defense when he was here. They gameplanned together and Saban was involved, but Muschamp did everything else.

There are/were folk who didn't like Pelini and didn't think he was worth a shite and if they don't think he was a good coordinator then I don't know who they think is. Well, I have a pretty good idea who some think are better but it doesn't have a whole lot to do with results.

Folk who didn't like and/or think Pelini wasn't any good(and we both know who all they are) do for a few reasons:

1. He was part of the Miles regime. Just like there are dickheads like Sammich/TigerTap who don't like Muschamp because he was part of the Saban regime.

2. Pelini didn't implement and utilize the same pressure/blitz happy schemes that the previous regime did.

3. Those fans aren't really LSU "fans", more like LSU critics. They don't have any real respect for LSU's program, coaches or players. As far as they are concerned, the grass on the other side is always greener. And as far as they are concerned, every other program and coach is better than what we have.

Maybe if they spent 14-18 hours/day on other teams' websites like they do this one, then maybe that wouldn't be the case.

Nonetheless, both coaches coached at different programs and different times and have had different players and different offenses to help them out.

As far as the topic of this thread goes, I'm not a believer in Walker defense but I can't write the guy off either because frankly I haven't watched enough UCLA ball over the past couple of years to make a really good judgement/opinion/evalutation one way or the other on the guy. I can't say he'll come here and put together the most vicious defense in college football but I can't say he won't either.

The only thing you can do is if he or Chavis or whoever it is comes here is wish him the best and hope it's a successful move. Anybody that wishes failure on this new staff shows his true colors and proves their allegiance isn't to the program, but to a particular coaching staff thus not a true fan and is an idiot to boot.

Las Cruces Times lists Walker as a candidate for the NMSU job. Ad is black and 6 of the 10 who get another interview are black. It says there are 4 black HCs and seemed to show that this hire would be black. Walker may be the HC over DC at LSU.

Rocket, how does your analysis change if we remove the LSU year's from Muschamp's stats? Again, I'm not just looking at stat's, which I believe weighs heavily in Pelini's favor, especially if we only consider years when the DC's were out on their own. When you you look at what they've done on the field and the magnitude of game's won, Pelini is decidedly better there too, IMO.

the "everything else" part did not leave much. I'm not hating on Muschamp, I think he has a great future. It's as unfair to compare those 2 as it is Les to other coaches who have been coaching longer than Les.

There's no use in doing so. He had a major role in preparation for the defense week in and week out and was a major factor in our success those three years that he was our DC.

Heavily? I don't see the huge discrepancies or whatever you want to call it. I know that Auburn only gave up 2 more touchdowns than we did in '06 and 10 fewer last year than we did last season. Hell, his defense at Texas, thus far, has given up fewer than our defense last year, in his 1st season there.

And you can't sit there and honestly tell me that he had the same caliber of athletes across the board on defense at Auburn last year as we did last season nor did he have as productive of an offense to help him out as Pelini had backing him up last year.

You're hung up on that angle and there really isn't any reason for it. For some reason you're under the impression he sucked his thumb for 3 years when he was employed as the DC here and that simply wasn't the case.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "on the field" and magnitude of games won is certainly debatable and I don't feel like going by through each game each coach was involved in and weighing the "magnitude" of those game. Because defense alone doesn't win games. Both have been involved in some tough games over the years. Muschamp is a good coordinator and so was Pelini.

Actually, he had many responsibilities. A reporter asked him what role(s) he had as DC under Saban at the press conference when they announced his hiring at Texas last January and he told what all he did, from coaching the defense at practice to scripting the plays, to calling plays on game day and all of gameday preparation, etc. Sure, he said Saban and he gameplanned together and Saban was involved.

Some folk feel, if a DC is guilty of doing that with the head coach who has a defensive background, that that is a sign of incompetence and a cause for disrespect. And that is misguided in my opinion. And it's obvious some folk feel that learning from/under Saban made him a bad coach or kept him from being a good coach and that's not true and misguided as well. And it's even more obvious that in order to be a good coordinator you have to have success under an offensive-minded coach and that is ridiculous.

Well, when you say he was a puppet(and you have) and he hasn't "sniffed" the same success as Pelini had as a DC, well......

Well, I just think in the grand scheme of things, when you evaluate the success of coaches, it's useless and a waste of time to compare a coach based on how good he is to another coach and that happens fairly frequently on here. Each coach, in my opinion, should be judged on how good he is, either as a DC or head coach, based on his own results and not compared to someone else's.

I hope Walker or Chavis or whoever the new guy is can field as good a defenses as Pelini did here, though. And I'm not as stuck on what "style" the coach runs as some others are as long as we aren't giving up a shite ton of points.

You are making the same assumption about me. You are just reporting on press clippings about what Muschamp said he did under Saban. Do you think he would say that he just followed orders and wasn't a key contributor?

There you go being misinformed again. That's just a little of what I knew. I grew up with folk who played at LSU when we were at LSU together and some played defense for him. Two of my very good friends were walk-on defensive players at LSU. Another one of my friends was a part of the support staff then and another was a volunteer assistant who his now a full-time coach. I'll leave it at that.

No. But you're under the impression he was lying. And you can't prove it. All you have is your misinformed opinion and that's why I have little regard for your opinion on pretty much anything.

How was does Walker get along with players?

The players absolutely loved Bo and respected him. They still keep in touch with him.

puppet may be a little strong. Protige is what I had in mind. Whether I'm right or wrong in not giving much credit to Will for LSU's defensive success at LSU, I believe that he gets much more credit for his successes at Auburn, and now Texas. To me, Bo is a more proven commodity because of his successes at both Nebraska and, more importantly, LSU. I'm definitely pulling for him to well at Texas. Same goes for Dooley at Tech. I know that many of the younger coaches at LSU under Saban still remain very good friends (ie., Muschamp, Dooley, Moffitt).
