According to reliable sources, Sal Sunseri has told Coach Saban that he would NOT accept the job (if offered) while in Knoxville without first listening to what Coach Saban and Alabama had to offer. Sources tell us that Coach Saban very much wants Sal to stay at Alabama and the Tide is expected to present an offer for him to stay in Tuscaloosa upon his return.

The key points here are ... (1) Sal agreed not to accept the DC position with the Vols without first meeting with Saban in Tuscaloosa, and (2) Saban very much hopes to retain Sal and will work to try to make that happen.

Sal is planning to return to Tuscaloosa tonight. It is unclear as to how this will unfold until more plays out this afternoon and tonight.

Update 11:52PM 1/11/12

quote:

According to govols247 (#247Sports #Tennessee) Alabama assistant coach Sal Sunseri was offered the defensive coordinator position at the University of Tennessee on Wednesday. This was just posted a few minutes ago.

Just spoke to the guys at govols247 and they said the meetings went well.

Sunseri did not make a decision tonight and is expected to meet with Alabama head coach Nick Saban on Thursday.

Sal would be foolish to go there without a long term contract and decent money.

However, if he ever wants to be a HC he's got to get to DC sooner than later. He's no spring chicken.

Agreed. He'd be jumping aboard a sinking ship. So, unless he had a multi-year deal with a significant buyout, I think it would be imprudent to go to Tennessee.

A nice pay increase and new title should keep him in Tuscaloosa.

We will see. I hope he stays at UA, because the longer it takes UT to find a DC, the more their recruiting class is affected by it.

Give Smart or Sunseri Steele's old title of "Head Defensive Coach" and have the other be DC.

Taking the Tennessee DC job would be the functional equivalent of running in a burning, vacant building. Can't see him leaving Vinnie to try to save Derrick Dooley's job.

Think this is a polite way to ask for a raise.

It's a win win for him. He will get a big raise no matter where he goes. For most of these coordinators and assistant coaches, the best way to make more money is to interview with another team. It wouldn't be a bad way for teams to make Bama spend more money if nothing else. I think it's just a ploy for him to get more money. He's not going to Tennessee, you can bank on it.

This decision will come down to the risk of Dooley being fired next year v. the reward of becoming a top notch DC or HC one day if UT is able to turn things around. Money won't be the issue.

When the former DC makes a "lateral" move to become Washington's DC, that should tell you something quickly though. UT's assistants are all bailing while the ball is in their court instead of begging for a job after Dooley is fired next year. Sunseri should think about that a lot. Just a little patience and I think he is Bama's DC in 2013 or 2014.

Staying at Bama would be a better career move.

Same here. We're going after 2 of their LB recruits hard right now. (Santos and Peters)
