With the nil era I think he would do much better since he doesn't like recruiting. Hire a gm type to handle all the nil stuff and boom.

He hasn’t been terrible the last 15 years. He was great at Oregon. He then tried his hand in the nfl. He wasn’t successful there, so he came back to coach at ucla. He actually turned ucla around. 3 winning seasons before he resigned. For him to resign a head coaching position at a p4 school to take a demotion, tell you how uncommitted to football ucla is. A lot of college coaches aren’t successful in the nfl, Saban, Spurrier, Kiffin etc.

Left the college game because of NIL. Left a head coaching job in college to be an NFL asst. He’s never coming back to college ball. I don’t folks truly understand how some coaches hate the college game now.

A college coach wants to be in control. It’s why some guys are college coaches and not NFL. They don’t like having that GM in their way. A guy like Saban, Meyer, Jimbo or Chip Kelly would never let someone else “handle” any decision making for his team in any way.
