Check This Round of the Coaching Carousel with O

If we can't land the top notch hire we're after this year, i.e. Herman or Fisher, why not grant O a de facto one year deal at a modest salary, and prepare to go all in on next year's hiring round? If a home run hire is not available next year, ride O year-to-year until eventually we land the ideal candidate... that is unless O's accomplishments in his de facto extended interim status warrant otherwise. Keeps the big money in our pockets until deploying it is warranted.
EDIT: For those hung up on what the appearance of a one-year deal would do to recruiting: I was referring to the spirit of the agreement not necessarily the actual terms: structure the contract as a mulit-year deal reserving LSU unilateral rights of termination with no buyout; it effectively works as a year-to-year deal although it is ostensibly otherwise. Recruits aren't typically dissecting the legal and commercial implications of contracts. A modest contract for O would be relatively easy to frame/defend as a function of his limited resume with respect to the position and not an indication of an intent to get rid of him in short order. O would take it for the same reason he accepted the interim position: it gives him a fair shot to earn a big contract at the school of his dreams.

This isn't how things work. You mouthbreathing kidney stone.

You would set the program back years and demolish recruiting.

This is a horrible idea. You expect top recruits to choose a school that is so unsure of its head coach that they're renting him on a year by year basis???

O is done as fb HC at LSU. He needs to coach at Louisiana-Lafayette Cajuns or the like.

And kill recruiting?
BRILLIANT!

Be prepared for LSU to have a terrible recruiting class under that scenario. Like bad. Flirting with ULL bad.

How does one year make that much of a difference?
The majority of unproven guys, such as Fleck, would still need to take another job and prove that they can sustain success.
Maybe you can argue that a guy like MacIntyre looks a lot more impressive if he can pull it off in back-to-back years at Colorado. But for the most part nothing will change.
The top targets who turn you down now aren't suddenly going to change their minds.
All you could hope for is the possibility of someone like Chip Kelly finally growing tired of the NFL.
Regardless, I'm not taking that risk. Every season you concede to delaying the change makes the rebuilding process that much more laborious and extensive.

Yeah, the way it works is you settle on option 4 with a 5 year contract. Good plan!

Orgeron would never demolish recruiting.

What options were Saban and Miles?
We have hired two NC winning coaches in a row. Why should we do anything different from what we've done previously?

Yes but other schools in our conference do and recruit the same players. Don't be so short sided

I don't remember what option Saban was but Miles came out of nowhere for the most part. At best he might have been option 3. Regardless there are plenty of talented coaches to be had, but we don't have someone in Alleva I trust to see the next star.

Look at the big brain on Brett. The recruits dissecting contracts aren't what you should be worried about, it's the negative recruit by other coaches pointing out your wonderful idea of a one year wearing make-up. What makes you think that O would sign anything like that?
