The process has already started. Lloyd Carr told Martin and UM President Mary Sue Coleman at the beginning of this season he was retiring at year's end. Also, Martin ruled out any candidates without HC experience, so the entire current staff is out. Ferentz has a 0% chance. He's overrated, and not a proven winner. He also has ties to OHIO, not Michigan or Michigan Football. Kelly was passed on by MSU, that has to mean something.

Les Miles WILL be offered the job, either if LSU loses to Arkansas or in the SECCG (hopefully not, I'm rooting for LSU) or after LSU wins the BCSNCG (hopefully). It's his choice to accept or not.

^^ It references the study on the speed differences between southern and northern schools.

Would UM really wait until Jan 8 to get a HC? That's pretty late in the recruiting game.

He didn't say he wouldn't leave. Therefore if he leaves to "go home," it won't be a Saban.

Hate to see him go. Next year when we have a bye week, we should go on road trip to Mich. and visit. Tickets or no, we could show the Yankees how we tail gate....

Dang, FX, you disapointed me. I clicked into that Slate article looking to see a myth exposed. It's always kind of fun when the conventional wisdom is skewered.

Alas, it looks like nothing but one person's opinion not backed up by any kind of rigorous scientific methodology. The writer throws in a few hand picked stats, but like you just said:
quote:

Aww come on, don't pick and choose statistics to best suit your point.

Heck, even internally, the writer of that article backs off of his own premise to an extent. He admits:

quote:

Like many myths, this one contains a bit of truth.

and

quote:

As a result, many of them play a more wide-open, pass-oriented style than Northern teams, which need players and systems that can succeed in the snow as well as in the sun. So, while the Southern style of football certainly looks faster, that doesn't mean that the players actually run faster.

In my admittedly humble opinion, that article hasn't "disproven" anything. When it comes down to believing Slate or my lying eyes, I gotta go with my own peepers on this one.

Let the scoops begin:

Latest Airline tracker shows a plan took off yesterday morning from Columbia Metro. Flight GH697 went to Orlando with several passengers from the SC airport. Only one got on flight THE2346 which was routed to Missouri. That same passenger borded flight THI234 which landed in New Orleans Monday morning. Word on the street is that it's Spurrier's golf pro and he's filling out a detailed list of golf courses in the area.

The thought of it makes me sick, even just typing it out, but imagine if LSU is in another close one either Friday or the following Saturday. Tigers find themselves down late, another last-minute drive in the works, Les makes one of those ballsy, crazy calls of his...and it doesn't work this time.

LSU loses.

Michigan, shortly thereafter, offers.

My take if this happens? The skies will be black with "Miles threw the game" conspiracy theories, and the Rant will overflow w/ hatred for a guy we now claim to love so much.

Miles wont lose a game on purpose to get the UM job come on! You can say what you want about Miles coaching ability but you can't deny Miles being a good guy. He would never do something so dumb especially if UM is willing to wait until after the season anyway.

What I fear is that he may second-guess himself.

I think he knows he will leave as soon as he gets the offer.

I know that he will do his best to win every game as long as he is here.

What I fear is that when it comes to one of his signature brass-balls decision moments, some voice in the back of his head will whisper - 'what if this doesn't work, and tomorrow you leave for UM.'

It would take a monumental man to ignore those thoughts and THEN decide what is "right thing" to do.

That is why I think if he already knows he is going, that he should step down now.

That would show his legendary 'balls' and say to the world "I love UM more than I love a NC."

He would be a legend at both schools if he did that.

He did not say he would not leave. He went on and on about how much he loves LSU and Louisiana, and how comfortable he and his family are here. Saban too said they loved it here, but he left. Remember, Miles did not proimise not to leave, he is only trying to get everyone to slack off so they can concentrate on the tasks at hand.

This has been said over and over again. If anyone gets an offer to coach or play at their beloved school, they're gone. No questions asked.

Imagine it the other way. You have a chance to win a NC at Michigan, which has recently won a NC under another coach. You have tons of respect from everyone in the nation. Then, you get an offer for the head coach's job at LSU. What would you do? It's not even a question. :beatdeadhorse:

But for some, the focus remains on the rift between Carr and Miles. Miles made enemies out of friends in and around Ann Arbor late last season when he voted Florida ahead of Michigan in the final regular-season poll. That allowed the Gators, not the Wolverines, to advance to the BCS title game, where they pounded Ohio State for the national championship. Also, there has been talk of recruiting friction between Go Blue and the Bayou.

Dan Ahern, Sports Columnist, 11/19/07

I guess this kind of sentiment in Ann Arbor, coupled with the known "rift" between Carr and Les won't play a part in what's going on? Personally I think there is more going on "beneath the scenes" than weany of us knows and in the end Les stays. Just MHO!

"It's not even a question." That's where you are wrong, my friend. It is a question, very real and very sad at the same time for everyone concerned. Why do you think Miles is so choked up?

On one hand, Miles is chasing a national championship, the dream of every coach. How many thousands of coaches have come and gone and never had an opportunity to play for a national title? If Les walks away from this chance, potentially, he may never get another.

On the other hand, Michigan is both his alma mater and where his heart lies for a college football team. Not only that, it's been an albatross hanging on his neck ever since he arrived at LSU. It's the one thing he's coveted, but now its the one thing that may destroy the dreams he's had of winning an NC and he obviously doesn't want to bail on the kids at LSU because he's a stand-up guy.

Let me tell you about stand-up guys. A golfing buddy of mine told me the story about how he accepted a really good position at a start-up company and a week later he was offered a similar position at a prestigious firm, one where he'd wanted to get his foot in the door. Because he had made a commitment to the first company, he stayed for less money. After three years he had become president of the company and taken the company public and made a huge killing on his stock options. Now, he's a multi-millionaire who is basically set for life. That other company he had really wanted to get into? That was Enron.

Miles is one of those guys who is going to really struggle with this. My hat is off to Skip and George Bass and Sean O'Keefe at LSU for recognizing that Les is an emotional guy and making sure that he knows that LSU is 100% on his side and want him to stay, letting him know that they can take the money side of the issue out of the picture.

So is it a question as you say its not? Hell yeah. It a HUGE question. But one that needs to be answered sooner rather than later.
