What about Mangino
Nobody wants to look at bowling ball with legs on the sideline. KU is having one good year.

Leave BC after one year? hmmmmm...bad timing?
BC to LSU is a big a step up as one can possibly make. Remember he was a coach at LSU for two years, he is young (cheap), up and coming, he has a very outgoing personality, has extensive NFL experience, has an offensive background, is an excellent O-line coach and he will probably have an ACC Championship in his first year at BC

These days, it seems that agents act as the buffer between schools and potential candidates...
exactly, and didn't Sabans agent recommend he look at this job? The internet has change how information is disseminated or leaked and sometimes not in a beneficial way. I feel some coaches out of fear of the way they will be perceived in their current job are too quick to say they are not interested. If they had some time to think it through they may see different angles.

What about Brian Kelly @ Cincy?
Looks like an up and coming coach.

Here's how LSU kept its pursuit of Saban quiet: After Tigers coach Gerry DiNardo was fired on Nov. 15, Dean asked Gil Brandt, a former Dallas Cowboys player personnel director, to help him find a new coach. Brandt phoned Saban a couple of days before Thanksgiving, around the same time that Miami coach Butch Davis said he wasn't interested in the position. Saban was interested and called his agent, Jimmy Sexton of Memphis. One of Sexton's business associates, Sean Tuohy, a former Ole Miss basketball player, has known Dean for years. He phoned Dean and suggested that Dean call Sexton. If the process had gone any deeper underground, LSU would have struck oil.
Once Dean discovered Saban could be had, he never wavered. The Tigers made Saban an offer on Monday, Nov. 29. That same day Saban's wife, Terry, went to Baton Rouge to check out the area. She had lunch with DeLaine Emmert, wife of LSU chancellor Mark, at TJ Ribs, which was polling customers about whom LSU should hire. The women cast the first two votes for Saban. When Terry returned home at 11 p.m., she and Nick talked for several hours about the offer and went to bed. They woke up at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, talked the move over again and decided to leap.

Chicken, if tenebrism will allow me, here are my comments to your list.
Spurrier - too old. As old as the retiring Carr.
Tubberville - would be a good choice. Knows how to win in the SEC.
Gruden - Would love it.
Del Rio - no. He is a USC man who could leave us down the road.
Petrino - good choice
Saban - I'm in the minority, but I would welcome him back.
Nutt - Too emotional during the game. Not the CEO type needed.
Crowton - Good at what he does. Anything more is a risk.
Pelini Same as Crowton. He may deserve a chance like Crowton has already had.
Tedford - Yes, although he is happy where he is.
Rich Rodriguez _ not sure he would leave his alma mater for LSU when he didn't for Bama.
I also think the Rutgers and USF coaches should be on the list along with Kelly at Cincy.

Unless Michigan has someone else in mind and makes a quick hire in the next week or so, I think they wait the 12 days until the SECCG and see what happens. Although no Tiger loyalists even seem to want to mention the possibility, LSU's season COULD be over a week from Saturday night. If that were to happen, the entire dilemma of the potential month-long delay in hiring Miles goes out the window. So I believe Michigan is interested, Miles is interested - BUT, an offer would be contingent on LSU losing the SECCG 12 days from now. If LSU loses, the 2 sides start talking the next morning. If LSU wins, Miles publicly says he is sticking with the Tigers and is not a candidate for the job in Ann Arbor.
(IF LSU loses to Arkansas, and the BCS Championship is out the window, even with a Tiger win in Atlanta, then Miles makes himself available immediately )

I agree...If M is set on Miles, and him on them, what is the rush?
Recruits still have time till signing day.

Maybe Germans, but did anybody see this sign at the Michigan/Ohio State game this past weekend?:
"We need a Carr with Les Miles"?

On the verge of being too old. I'm not sure how motivated he still is, and would be worried about the defense if he were here. Also, I'm not sure how dedicated he would be to recruiting, although he does seem to be doing well at South Carolina. I'd hate to see other schools making significant inroads into Louisiana again, though.
quote:
Tubberville
I already discussed him above. Not a bad hire, but I wouldn't be overly excited about it.
quote:
Gruden
Generally, a pro coach is going to be better than college coaches in the X's and O's, schemes, etc. Also, they have an edge in recruiting from having the NFL pedigree. But, as we've seen in various examples currently, a pro pedigree doesn't necessarily translate into college success. I'd feel a bit "iffy" about Gruden.
quote:
Del Rio
Ditto.
quote:
Petrino
Apparently a good coach, based on what he did at Louisville, but another Sabanesque wanderer. He wouldn't stay long, and I'm kind of tired of that.
quote:
Saban
Ditto.
quote:
Nutt
I don't want him. Too much craziness, play calls and decisions that leave me scratching my head, and the Arkansas fans would be laughing their asses off at us for taking their reject.
quote:
Crowton
Has already tried the head coaching gig twice with limited success. The offense has been great this year, as his teams always are in the first year or two he's at a school, but his head coaching track record hasn't inspired a lot of confidence in me.
quote:
Pelini
No idea how he would do as a head coach. He's had some success as a coordinator, but that's a whole different ball game than head coach.
quote:
Tedford
A rough season this year notwithstanding, he's done very well at Cal despite the lack of facilities and a school/program not really known for its football history. I have no idea whether he'd want to come to LSU or the SEC, but he would probably be a pretty good hire if he did, although he's not known for having much on defense, a staple of LSU and the SEC.
quote:
Rich Rodriguez
He also wouldn't be a bad choice. His numbers are probably inflated a little by the fact that he's in the Big East, but he's got a good offensive scheme and apparently is a very solid recruiter. Ditto Tedford on the defense thing, though.
The problem is, it's easy to shoot down practically any name, but it's really hard to come up with a great one.

What about Brian Kelly at Cincy... he might be the best coach out there, realatively young but an experienced head coach, and no D-I loyalties could make him a lifer.
Any chance he would leave Cincy after 1 year?

Lots of good candidates that have been at their new school for just one year...I am assuming that each of them is off the board.

Listening to Cowherd this morning on the way in to work he was talking with someone and said it is important for Michigan to name their next HC over the course of the next week for recruiting. I thought that was a little ridiculous since it seems there is still plenty of time to wrap kids up that a couple of weeks really shouldn't make a dent in anything. However, I truly don't see Michigan waiting till Jan 8th to make a move, which is why I think that if this thing goes down with Les and Michigan, it will be after the SECCG and LSU will opt to appoint an interim HC for what is hopefully the NC game. CRAZY when you think about it, but I'm not too sure I would want the Michigan Head Coach coaching my LSU Tigers in the National Championship Game even if he offered to do so, especially with all the distractions that would come with a move to AA, and the general transition that would be in motion during the game.

We already knew he could recruit, now it looks like he learned to coach. I'll take my chances with yearly top 3 recruiting classes.
