He has done nothing. Was fired by Mack, fired by Nick. At Houston it was HERMAN'S system he was running. Do not get the lure of Applewhite. Is it because he's from Baton Rouge?

yea, I don't get the Applewhite love either. Saban fired him after only one year, and it's Herman's system at Houston with Greg Ward being a stud.

Maybe Applewhite is actually a good coordinator, but I haven't seen enough proof yet to justify bringing him in here.

But he's from Baton Rouge, and apparently that's enough for a lot of posters on this board.

Well, you'd like to think he picked up a thing or two having worked under Herman

Just because they heard the name before. That's all. Name recognition.

I really hope those guys take note that Saban will not be bringing Applewhite back to Bama.

People only want what they are familiar with.

Applewhite is a very good recruiter. And he did call the plays at UH. Herman sometimes overrode him but only on critical downs when necessary. You can assume Applewhite picked up some great knowledge in his two years with Herman.

1. He's one of us
2. It's possible he's learned from his mistakes
3. I don't want him

Mack Brown didn't fire him. He left after Brown got fired. Also at Bama he was handcuffed by what Saban wanted to do and it just didn't work. He'd have full reins over the offense here. I am not advocating for him but he's not a bad candidate for what we want to do. He's also had 2 years to learn from Herman.

quote:

It is currently being mentioned in several circles that Saban did not want Applewhite to continue as offensive coordinator; to be sure, he apparently wanted him to continue in some capacity on the staff, but not in his current role. All of this, in all honesty, should come as no major surprise. When Applewhite was hired twelve months ago, he was hired with a great degree of hesitation on the part of Saban. When Applewhite was at Rice, he had full reins over the offense and implemented a full-blown spread attack. However, it was very obvious from the beginning that Saban was very concerned at the prospect of handing the entire offense over to a 29 year old kid, one with only four years of coaching experience, and only one year as a coordinator. So, the wary Saban decided to do something about it, and this is where Joe Pendry comes in.

ETA: Guess where Kiffin got all of his spread principles from? He spent a couple weeks with Herman. Major spent 2 years with the man.

He wasn't fired by Mack Brown. Brown was fired and Applewhite wasn't retained.

Yeah, LSU should only hire coaches that Saban wants. But then according to most, Saban gets whatever he wants so LSU can't even have those guys.

I'm not advocating for Applewhite, but being "fired" by Saban after one year when he was 29 doesn't really have much impact on how I view him now.

I would be fine with Applewhite. He seems like a good fit for many reasons.

I'm not against him. He has limited experience as a play caller, but Houston's offense was 38th this year, 13th last year. His only year calling plays at Texas they were 61st, but that year offense was off the charts all over the country.

Applewhite's one year at Rice they were top 50 while converting from the wishbone.

Can anyone name another OC regarded as highly as Applewhite that has never garnered HC attention?

Good OCs become HCs at smaller schools. Now, a failure as HC doesn't mean he's a bad OC.

I agree with the OP. Considering how much focus we've put on trying to improve our offense, don't we need to give the job to a proven homerun hire (like Aranda was for defense)? We have multiple years worth of entrenched dysfunction to reverse. We fired our head coach over it, turned the whole program on its ear. We know our new head coach isn't going to be the one to fix it. There is going to be a tremendous amount of focus on the OC and what he's accomplishing over the next few years. We need a rock star or else what was the point of this whole exercise?
