At least he's no longer available for an LSU job. That's a plus.

Eddie Gran is still available! Go get someone to call Ed Orgeron about Eddie Gran.

Basically he has a better resume than Joe Brady had when he was hired by LSU. That hire seemed to work out for LSU.
These are always hit and miss. Brady worked out for sure. At the end of Fulmer's tenure, he tried to go that route with Dave Clawson and the Clawfense from Richmond and it failed miserably ultimately leading to Fulmer's firing.

Dont knock it. Joe brady had pretty much the same resume.
Including being a soulless ginger.
Your kidding right? Joe brady was at LsU for 1 year.

It's a little more complicated than that. Fulmer never let Clawson fully install his offense while at Tennessee nor could he because the offensive talent was thin beyond tailback Arian Foster. Clawson actually was working to fix that. When the staff was fired, Clawson had commitments from quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Tahj Boyd. Petty started for two Big 12 title teams at Baylor. Boyd helped usher in the aforementioned golden age at Clemson.

I don’t see the problem with this hire for Kentucky
Most UK fans are good with it. Because it wasn't just about play-calling for Gran (and Hinshaw).
Stoops had to go out and get someone who could develop QBs (his WR experience doesn't hurt either). It's been one of the biggest things holding the program back from getting over the hump. And with Beau Allen on the roster, there's potential to really make a leap at that position with the right coach developing him.
It's a dice roll when it comes to play-calling but I don't know that you get much worse than what Gran rolled out this season. But if you're not a top tier football program, that's a risk you have to take. It's either hire a potentially over the hill OC or luck out getting an up and comer.

Mud's been melting a bit over this hire.

I just think of the Bengals hiring their coach last year bc he shook hands with McVay for a couple seasons and was young. Jury is still out on that one but I don’t think he’s a home run. Teams got a little out of hand trying to duplicate the recipe with a lower level chef instead of trying to reverse engineer that success into something that fits what they are looking for
There's a huge difference between being an NFL HC and a college coordinator. I think a lot of schools are going to be mining the pro ranks for analysts and position coaches and start offering them a co-OC/co-DC position with a pitch like "Come here for 2 years, you get to put your ideas on the field, you'll do minimal recruiting and maximum game planning, and we'll make sure you get all credit if it all goes well. Then go back to the pro's with a filled out resume."
