look, although im a die hard LSU fan, and this is hard for me to say, but i will take the Michigan job if offered
no more questions

What if they didn't have to match it and Les just took less money for the job that he has always wanted?

The buyout argument is ridiculous. This is big boy football and LSU isn't using a buyout to keep Miles from going back to his alma mater. No way.
It is big boy football, and, more importantly, big business football. If LSU's choice is (i) terminate a contract and get paid nothing, (ii) insist on getting paid what you're due contractually at the risk of having a coach stay who wants to go, or (iii) settle for a compromise payment, it would be bad business to choose option (i). All that said, Miles would find a way to honor his obligation in the unlikely event he decides to take an offer he probably isn't going to get anyway. And it's that quality that makes him a coach we don't want to lose (well, and averaging 10 wins a season doesn't hurt, either).

Agreed. Miles showed class in passing in 2007 so as to not sabotage a team with still possible MNC dreams, and LSU could mow return the favor, so to speak
This is a business. It makes no business sense for LSU to let Miles go without getting the 1 million+ buyout. Miles can't bitch, he freely negotiated his contract. Besides being a deterrent to other schools looking to get Miles from LSU, the buyout money would aid LSU in its search for a new coach.

the buyout is not 10 million what lsu would have to pay les if they fired him.
the buyout is 1.5 million if miles leaves for michigan. miles or michigan would have to pay lsu 1.5 million for lsu to release him of his contract. miles does not have a buyout if he leaves for another school.
and i seriously doubt lsu would waive the buyout if miles decided to go to michigan. thats free money for lsu.

Well, I mentioned that it was obvious, but still, that could be the difference. Michigan will have to pony up a lot more $$$ for Miles than Hoke. And maybe Miles isn't even interested in going to a school that just got absolutely massacred in its 3rd tier bowl game. But Hoke will go for (comparitively) nothing.
I will also mention that sometimes coaches like where they're at. I know Tressel turned down Miami (Fl) to stay at Youngstown State. Would it be that unheard of if he would rather stay in a city like San Diego over Ann Arbor, either wanting to build SDSU to heights unknown and/or wait for a different job that he'd prefer over Michigan to open in future years? So at least we can confirm he 100% wants Michigan if they offer.

All Michigan has to do is match the guaranteed money they gave RichRod.
6 years at $2.5 Million/year is the same as $3.75M/year for 4 years (what Les has now). Why do people act like they have to match the annual salary? They don't. It's his freaking alma mater. If he really loves UM, he'll go for that type of contract.

Forgive me because I don't know much about Hoke outside of him being the San Diego State HC. Is he connected to Michigan in some way?
Posted on 1/4/11 at 3:05 pm to Bankshot
He was an assistant there for 8 years.
Posted on 1/4/11 at 3:05 pm to Bankshot
Assistant Coach under Lloyed Carr from 98 - 05 I think.

He knew the pay raise that was coming if he won.

This. I wouldn't be happy that Miles is gone, but I certainly couldn't blame him. I'd be glad for him and I'd keep up with him raping the Big10 for sure. I'd be a Michigan fan

I simply think it's hilarious people act like UM doesn't have the money.
They'll go cheap and hire Hoke who hasn't won squat?
Hoke has been a head coach for 8 years and has an overall losing record (47-50). He's done well this year, but this is in the MWC for Goodness sake. At least Urban Meyer won a freaking BCS game and championships before making the jump to a major BCS school.

no its not, its a 5 million dollar difference, not even close to being the same.

and being 57 years old, he may not want to go to a program where he would have to rebuild from the bottom up to play his type of scheme., alma mater or not.

Can you do simple math? Really?
2.5 x 6 = 15
3.75 x 4 = 15
Please explain this extra $5 million? As for being old, not even close. 63 wouldn't be that old for many coaches. If you are talking over just a 4 year period, sure, but we are talking guaranteed money. If Les doesn't win the SEC West in the next 2 years he'll be gone. Believe it.
