Now thats how you melt with dignity, boys... well done there semotruman, well done. Subtle, yet refined.

Well, thank you. I think.
Seriously, this could be way worse. The players and boosters love Odom, he is very well thought of, he was Pinkel's choice to succeed him - just didn't think it would be so soon.
I was hoping for some flash. But Mizzou isn't flashy, so this is not unexpected. WDWWD, part deux.
The true melt will be held in check until I see what coordinators he brings in. IF we hire a good OC, I'll settle back and drink some Jameson. If he retains anyone on the offensive staff, with the possible exception of Andy Hill, I'll start throwing things.

Maybe he'll have the "fire in the belly" that so many coaches lack...

He's an intense guy. Very nice, polite, thoughtful. But intense. Cerebral. Always thinking, always pushing his guys to get better. Always thinking about the next step.
I had friends who played with him back in the 90s, and was around him a few times. Great guy. Doesn't seem as though he relaxes much. But the players love him, as do the boosters. If he can hire a good OC with experience recruiting in the south, he might be OK.

I don't know how he will fare as an SEC head coach, but the man can coach up a defense. Most of you just don't know how bad Memphis was all around, but especially on defense after Larry Porter. There were many FCS teams that could have beaten the Tigers in Fuente's first season, and UT Martin did.
By last year, Odom had built them into a very strong unit. Strong enough to hold Ole Miss to 10 points through 3 1/2 quarters in Oxford with no help from the offense.
He had better hire a top shelf offensive staff, but you can bet Mizzou's D will continue to be good.

Mizzou's D was good with Steckel. This hire is something you would do in the Big 12. Mizzou is about to see a lot of 6 win seasons. After 3 years Odom will get fired, Mizzou will finally sign a real coach and 5 years after that we will compete again. 8 long years ahead.

I'm not sure what to make of this...
It could be a Larry Smith hire that stabilizes the program or a Woody/Stull thing that just doesn't fit.
I think MU is glad Stec is nowhere near Columbia right now. Hopefully Hill stays somehow.

A school that scored 4 offensive touchdowns in SEC play is hiring a man who has no clue what an offense is?
Well maybe he is the reason they actually won 5 games, and fielded one of the top defenses in the nation?
If he's smart enough NOT to tell his players it's ok to go on strike and to hire somebody with more experience than the current staff ballboy as the OC, he's already an upgrade over Pinkel.
If he can keep his Dline coach in the fold he will have all the other "current staff" he will need. It's not like the qualified candidates are busting down the door to HC at Mizzou just now, it's probably lucky they didn't blow this hire.

"6 wins" ??? HEY That's a BOWL SEASON!!
A bowl season w/ Pinkel as HC would be a "good year" for Mizzou fans but w/ Odom he should be fired for doing the same thing? Well that would be par for Mizzou fans.

I get you think Pinkel sucks Jagd, but you can't argue with the fact since 2007 he had 5 10 win seasons and only missed 8 wins twice. If Odom did that I would be ecstatic.
I expect 5-7 or 6-6 to become the new norm, not 8-4 or 10-2 like it was under Pinkel since 2006.

I think Pinkel is exactly what he was, a very average coach who was never better, never a major conference winner in all those year, because he's just not very bright.
His choice of OC "hires" is more than enough for any objective thinking observer to come to the same conclusion. Pinkel skated by for years w/ a better defense helping to cover for his inane offense, and that was largely due to coaches like Kul, Odom, and even Stec.
Maybe Odom won't be better at the top spot than either of those two would be, and yet he could still easily match anything Pinkel has done, all he has to do is start by making an actual "smart" OC hire.

Odom was a phenomenal DC at Memphis. Everyone here was hoping he'd be Fuente's replacement at Memphis. The players loved him.
I think this is a dark horse "best hire" out of the SEC replacements this year, depending on who SC ends up hiring.
I think he's actually a better hire than Kirby Smart at Georgia, at least relative to the expectations each school has.

This hire is much better to me than what South Carolina did. Odom has been a tremendous coordinator, they need to nail the OC hire but that's no different than Smart or Muschamp and you kind of know what you're getting with Muschamp

I'm honestly surprised it's not a black guy. With all the turmoil there, the safe spacers will be angry they didn't get the final say in the hire
Posted on 12/4/15 at 9:16 am to Upperdecker
The truth is there wasn't that much turmoil at Mizzou. It was less than a week and it wasn't violent or even mildly aggressive.
Posted on 12/4/15 at 9:22 am to TDawg1313
They couldn't get anyone willing to put up with all the political bullshite/racism crap to coach there. They promoted from within, and clearly the players at Mizzou are running the show.

more important than being "loved" by the players is being respected for a football coach, and that seems to be the case for Odom, for both players and coaches alike.
If Odom makes smart staff hires, he'll easily do as well as Pinkel, and if he doesn't make smart staff hires, he'll still PROBABLY do as well as Pinkel.
Either way gratz to Barry and good luck!

I love this quote:
Yeah, because he was the only guy who would actually take the job. Pretty clear who you got to go with at that point.

"We are extremely excited to announce Barry Odom as the new leader of the Mizzou football program," Missouri athletic director Mack Rhoades said in the news release. "We had the opportunity to visit with a number of excellent coaches throughout our search. At the conclusion of that process, Coach Odom was the clear choice to serve as our next coach."
