Auburn University, which is seeking a replacement for Tommy Tuberville, has asked for and was granted permission to speak with University at Buffalo coach Turner Gill, a source told The Buffalo News on Saturday.

Auburn spoke with UB athletics director Warde Manuel on Friday about Gill, who led the Bulls to the Mid-American Conference championship with an upset victory over No. 12 ranked Ball State at Ford Field. It is not clear when Gill will interview for the position, the source said. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson and Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and believed to be the leading candidates.

Gill was out recruiting on Saturday and was not available for comment and Manuel declined comment.

Gill interviewed for the position at Syracuse University last week, a source told the News, and is believed to be among a host of candidates who have interviewed for the job to replace Greg Robinson.

Interesting.

I think he would be a better hire than Peterson.

I think so to, did you see his post game interview from the MAC championship.

He said something all the lines of "they did it, I told them if they worked hard they could be champions" and then he just kind of stood there.

I dont know, his interview or lack of one just said alot.

I remember my parents talking about him because they both went to Nebraska.

Not surprised. I almost posted this morning that AU should look at him.

He said much more than that....

It was an exhibition of humility and gratitude.

No they run a pretty balanced attack.

I'd hate to see him at Auburn, he's a hell of a coach.

I agree, but I was hoping it would be someone that doesn't have as much potential as Turner Gill

He turned one of the worst programs in America into a conference champ in 3 seasons. I think they're looking at his whole body of work at Buffalo...not just one game

Buffalo used to be the worst of the worst in Div. 1-A, but Gill has turned it around. I think he's legit.

AUBURN — One significant candidate appears to have fallen in the Auburn head-coaching search while another might be making his charge.

A day after leading his team to the MAC championship, Buffalo coach Turner Gill appears to have surfaced as a serious candidate for the job.

The Buffalo News reported that Auburn requested and received permission to speak with Gill on Friday before the MAC Championship Game. According to the story, Buffalo athletics director Warde Manuel granted Auburn permission.

Manuel did not return several messages left by The Star on Saturday.

Buffalo to Auburn is a BIG move...I don't think Auburn would risk hiring him at this time. Let's see what Turner can do at another school for 2-4 years, then maybe he is ready to be considered, especially one the caliber of Auburn. Turner would be fine for Miss. St. at this time, but not Auburn...

A lot of LSU folks hated Jimbo, I don't think he was THAT bad; but I do have my doubts about him being a head coach. What do you feel about Leach? I think he brings a lot of baggage from what I have heard...
