Why not give him an unmatchable salary, well over $4 million per year and take him off the market? Why not make the buyout clause insurmountable? (Miles' buyout clause if he leaves for Michigan remains at $1.25 million.)

I love Miles but have no respect for him at this point if he leaves.
He would be taking sloppy 2nds or 3rds.
The Rutgers coach was offered the job and he said no.
I can't see Miles taking the job after saying he wasn't going to and not being the first choice.
He will not be sloppy seconds.

I agree.
I think his pride is hurt that petty politics seemed to have scuttled his chances.
Them coming back to him after some public rebukes, including ones from coaches they interviewed, like Greg Schiano, and from others who were just on their list, like Sean Payton, seems like a desperation measure more than anything else.
(BTW, at least one Detroit-area newspaper claims that Schiano was offered a lower salary to take the Michigan job than what Rutgers is paying him now.
That just reinforces the view I have of Michigan's athletics department, which is that they're cheap and that they paid no attention to the embarrassing searches performed by Notre Dame and Alabama over the past few years.
The article is an interesting read, as it chastises the Michigan athletics department for the way they handled this search, yet at the same time shows the same kind of hubris that got them into this situation to begin with.

I remember (we) the LSU fan base believing we could land Bill Belichich if we offered him the job..after Saban left...and it was hard to find a candidate that was a big fish and available..
Moving your family etc,,,Pressure, and currently loyalty to your current job always is a big pull.. plus the politics involved (who is your new boss?)
With that said, I can't believe (if) the Rutgers coach was actually offered the UM job, he actually turned down Michigan over Lowly Rutgers... Maybe the administration at Michigan has a bad rap in the coaching fraternity? He is a solid coach IMO

While there may have been a couple of delusional folks who thought this, it is a stretch to think the "fan base" actually believed this fantasy.
I can remember the delusions of a few back in the 1970s who always were talking about the house that Ara Parseghian was supposed to be buying in Baton Rouge and that he was going to replace Cholly Mac. But those few did not represent the fan base who thought the whole idea was crazy. The same is true for Bellichek. Maybe .5% thought it was possible, but 99.5% never did.

Sure is getting rough in Michigan, looks like people are getting on Martin and Carr. Espn is not one of their favorites right now either.

Interesting...Remember how everyone wanted Miles gone after the Arkansas game? The exact thing is going to happen if we lose the MNC, and that's when Michigan will most likely pounce on him.

You think they'd wait that long? I don't know. I think it's possible they'd look to make an offer soon, if they are going to do it and so if he says no, they can move on.

I hope Michigan makes a move soon, before the 17th, that's when the recruiting dead period begins and if the don't have a new coach by then, they may wait until the BCS championship.
On another note though, I don't see Michigan putting up the money for Miles. I've heard the reason some of these coaches are falling through is because they are only willing to put up about 1.5mil. In order for Miles to not take a pay cut, Michigan would have to offer ~2.6+1.25 buyout =~3.85 for year one. I don't see this happening. And if he wins the NC, make that ~3.5+1.25=4.75

If they feel like they can get him after the National Championship game, I think they will. I think if Miles gives them an indication that he can't make a move until then, they'll wait it out for him. It'd be the only logical move that would save Martin's arse.

I have another recollection about "everybody" How the LSU powers that be went for Miles after the Arky loss and before knowing if we could the SEC game with a nice offere and extension

But he'd be so far away from it (Michigan) that it would blow over eventually. It wouldn't compare to the move Saban made because he's just a stone's throw away. And when we got a new coach, and with recruiting picking up, people will stop bitching about it.
