Someone explain to me exactly how the rollover works, please.

It's basically a one year extension of the current terms.

Does Miles have to lobby for this? If so, what happens if Alleva doesn't give it to him?

if he wins 8+ games he is eligible, but its not a guarantee it must be approved by the AD. Last year it was not rolled over and should not be this year.

agreed. however, how accurate is your statement FriscoKid? not saying it isn't (and i hope it is), just wondering the source. if i was in charge, 2010 would be a pivotal year for miles. improve or you're gone.

We won't get word either way.
This does not have to be and will not be announced. They want it kept quiet.

100% accurate. I heard the same thing and Belowpar confirmed it a few weeks back. I am also hearing there will be no extension/rollover this year.
Short of winning the SEC (not SEC West), it will never be rolled over - at least that is what I understand. Apparently neither our new AD nor the current TAF braintrust are big fans of the contract.

So what's the actual # of years left of the contract at this point? Just curious ...

Language in the contract...it's presumed that the contract is extended by 1 year with 8 or more regular season wins.
Rollover is at the discretion of the Chancellor. If the Chancellor decides not to extend the contract, the President must concur.

Current contract expires on Dec 31, 2012. Rollover did not happen last year.

He was upset and fought to have it rolled over. He had a WANT to get another year after the display of mediocrity that was 2008.
