Plenty of reasons for Notre Dame to be excited about Freeman, but I definitely think it was a forced hire and they absolutely wanted to get it done before the CFP was determined. However , there’s no scenario where hiring someone that green with head coach experience is not a big risk.

High risk could net high reward.

ND panicked. Freeman may well be a great fit, but I don’t know anyone who can look at this and think ND didn’t panic.

You just made your 1st year defensive coordinator your head football coach. And it’s his FIRST head coaching job. AT NOTRE DAME.

This is us hiring O permanently on purpose and then acting like we didn’t just panic. Marcus Freeman being named head coach at Notre Dame is absolute bonkers.

But also, it’s low key them acknowledging how incredible Brian Kelly was there. They are doing literally everything then can to keep that going.

I don't think they made that decision for the playoffs.

They had a very slim chance of making it.

They made it to preserve the roster and recruiting classes. Short sighted process.

They hired him to be the hciw.

You are just guessing that they did it to preserve the recruiting class.

I don't see swarbrick making a short sighted decsion like that.

I would bet this affects their assistant hires going forward.

Elston and Rees never made sense to me as the coordinator hires. I doubt those are the guys Freeman would have picked on his own. I'm sure he has good relationships with them and all, but he's a first time HC and Elston has like 1 year as a coordinator 16 years ago and Rees is just finishing his second year.

And I realize Kelly gave Rees a lot of autonomy, but I'm sure he was still more involved in the offense than people are admitting.

It's a little weirder than that. He was Fickell's DC last year. So they hired the guy at HC over the guy who actually put together the program Freeman came from?

Hmmmm.

Bad move by ND but amazing move for Freeman. He might be the luckiest first time HC in quite awhile to take over a winning blue blood program. He made the right career path last year by not going to LSU.

I think part of it was Cincy being a virtual lock for the playoffs at that point and they didn’t want to wait to try to hire Fickell and just wanted to secure their recruiting class and ride the wave of good press as the poor abandoned blue blood program

I don’t mean does Freeman have regrets, I’m sure he’s ecstatic, and rightly so. I mean Notre Dame fans and boosters who paid him.

I really think ND shouldve waited for fickell. I believe he wouldve gone their. Freeman is a high entergy guy that may recruit well but its a huge gamble for them.

This is an example of letting players pick the coach and it tends to end disastrously
