That's exactly right, and it is particularly acute in situations where the hc, absent prodigious native ability, has failed to serve in the coordinator's role on offense or defense.
The implication is a failure to master the critical thinking required for game planning on at least one side of the ball, likewise a deficient ability to analyze, adjust or improvise.
There is only a rubber stamp available to this sort of unqualified, functionally illiterate hc. The best talent will not long suffer a deeply flawed, inadequate executive, if at all.

All coaches need good assistants. Miles would have been good with a top notch OC. DiNardo had good assistants when he first got here. His downfall was that he did not replace them with good coaches when they left.
