Texas already gets top 5 recruiting classes virtually every year. Not like they are going to suddenly grab all available talent. Still plenty of talent in Texas, LA, etc.. for us to have top 5 recruiting classes.
Exactly. I am much more worried about OU's next coaching cycle.
Right now with the coaching uncertainty at Texas we are cleaning up, but after their hire they will bounce back at least with recruiting for a while.
Texas has a huge problem most don't have to deal with- their coach has to have a CEO aspect to run the biggest business in college football. It takes a certain skillset, and guys who are killing it on smaller stages (like an Art) might burn out when billionaires and the LHN want to check the toilet paper before they flush.
So I am not going to guess who might kill it for them, I am just happy Stoops made another BCS bowl so he doesn't get fired for the terrible recruiting class Sumlin is about to force him to take.

Jimbo isn't coming. No way Texas can wait until after the NC game to go after him and no way is Jimbo going to consider leaving while preparing for the biggest game of his life. The timing just doesn't work.
I would love for Texas to hire Freeze, I don't see how he could be an upgrade to Mack in any way other than being younger.
Briles would be interesting but I think a lot of folks overrate him (at least at Texas). Briles is a control freak and kind of a strange dude. He is famous for showing up late to coaches conferences that he speaks at and doing and saying some very odd things. That works fine at Baylor where they treat him like a God and protect him. Briles has some serious thugs on that Baylor team and he lets them go. He goes to Texas and he is under the microscope with every wart on display. He could blow up Billy Gillispie/Mike Leach/Mike Price style.
No matter who Texas hires they won't be Mack and they won't be Saban so that is a lot of folks they will have to win over from the start. It's a hot mess over there.
The guy that would probably make me the most nervous amongst the realistic candidates would be Charlie Strong.

Art Briles SEEMS like a no-brainer until you look into him. His contract with Baylor stipulates that he doesn't have to do any alumni functions or fund-raising. He's a shockingly horrible public speaker and hates that kind of groveling shite anyway. Can you imagine a head coach at UT who refuses to do coach's nights or hobnob with the rich? A guy who is abrasive with the media? Art Briles would win big there, but he won't do the Longhorn Network and isn't cut out to be a public figure, so it's really a non-starter.

For example, clearly Nick Saban to Bama was the worst nightmare hire for LSU fans.
Who scares y'all most as next coach at Texas?
Art Briles? Seems like he would do the most damage recruiting wise. If Texas can get him, I don't see anyone better out there. What he's done at Baylor is off the charts.
You can't say Saban so choose another name please. For purposes of this thread, let's assume Saban was never born.
Briles would be our biggest worry, but Texas won't hire him because of where he is coaching right now. Does that sound stupid? Of course, but its the honest truth.
Realistically there just isn't a coach that would be available right now that we would worry about. That doesn't mean that there isn't one or more that could take the job and get them back to prominence, but there isn't any specific fear from us.

The SEC.

Hell, Briles has taken BU to being the # 1 football program in the state. He got a big raise and will have a brand new stadium next years, is situated in the middle of Texas and is making more money than he ever dreamed possible for a kid from Rule, Tx. I doubt he's interested in leaving Waco. With the amount of money he's making now, even Waco can be tolerable.

I agree with this.
Honestly, I just don't see a really big-name hire for the Longhorns this year. There are some high-profile names out their, but they are just not that likely to happen. Any coach looking at the longhorns right now is likely in more than a mere less-than-ideal situation. The job has significant drawbacks and the coach is looking for an out. If the situation is stable and the coach has a good chance to be successful long-term, the risk of taking on the longhorn hc job is not worth it.
Thus, I don't think a splash hire is going to happen, but it's not necessary. A program like that doesn't need a big-name hire. An up-and-comer from a program with a lot less tradition will be a great hire, given the resources. That's what makes the t.u. job so good, but the best job has to be a significant move up for the coach.
Coaches that I think would be great hires:
1. Tim DeRuyter -- LOVE THAT GUY. Lots of energy. Would immediately bring back a truckload of credibility to the program.
2. David Cutcliffe -- Did well at frickin' DOOK. If he keeps it competitive or (God forbid) beats A&M in the bowl, jump on that hire.
3. Sonny Dykes -- That guy just needs a solid program do take to the top. He would do VERY WELL at t.u.
4. Mark Hudspeth -- Probably the most UNDERRATED coach right now, although he needs a bit more experience.

None scare me. But I do think they can upgrade. Recruiting battles will always be fought, and we play in different leagues.
That being said, I think that Art Briles (first choice) or Jimbo Fisher would be terrific choices.
Briles is obvious because he already has a good recruiting network in Texas. And he actually knows Xs and Os. Also, it would weaken an in-conference opponent at the same time. And he also has built in butthurt/hate for the Aggies...

Briles hates Texas as much as he hates A&M... he's being VERY well taken care of at BU

I agree with the sip above. I just don't see Briles leaving Baylor for another big 12 program.
Jimbo Fisher is a perfect example of a coach in a position that is not as good as the longhorns, but good enough to make outweigh the risk. Some fans are so cocksucking arrogant sometimes that they think their program is so good that ANY coach would drop down and beg for the job. It's just not true.

Texas will end up hiring some known person, but not someone who is a home run hire by any means, just a "oh we'll wait and see how he does" type guy. Briles would be a home run hire.

It's only year one but Dykes just went 1-11 at Cal.

Jeebus. I forgot he was the coach at Cal this year. They are turrible.

Speaking of up and coming hires, I'd really love for us to hire Gary Andersen, who was at Utah State before coaching at Wisky this season. I love the fire he coaches with and think he'd do a hell of a job at Texas. Too bad there's almost no way we'd hire him.

Just Wait, Dykes will do great. He needs to bring in his own type of offensive recruits for his system. Do not forget Tony Franklin is with him as well
