WTF did I miss? He still has a seat on the selection committee no? That alone makes this really bizarre.

Well, no one knows for sure but him and Bert were buddies. If he wasn't willing to move on from Bert then we didn't have much choice.

Arky 247 mods are alluding to something beyond Beliema relationship. People insinuating it's related to the department's financial performance. That's really the only thing that makes sense, unless he recently bought a motorcycle.
