I was dragging the Brothers Karamazov around for like a couple of months and never was able to get into it for some reason. Will return to it for sure, as I know it's one of people's favorites. Crime & Punishment sucked me in, but BK did not this time.
I finally decided this week that it was time to put it away for now and select something else because I was getting no reading done, and War & Peace was next on my list. Boy oh boy, it has sucked me in. I love Tolstoy's writing style. Truly enjoying it.
This was a good lesson for me, as I have a ton of unread books. I think I get "reader's block" when I am hell-bent on reading a particular book and it doesn't click, and when that happens, I just end up reading nothing. Good to cut ties and return to it later if it doesn't click.
eta: have a Putin biography on audiobook that I'm like 3/4 of the way through. Would also recommend. It's called The New Tsar.
And during the day I've just started 12 Rules for Life, which I've always been meaning to read. Basically doing audiobook in the car, the beautiful Tolstoy at night, and a quick chapter of 12 Rules for Life during the day here and there.

Now that’s funny.
Best case scenario is we get some cheap graphic novel cliff notes version before he dies.
He’s cashed in. The world and story he created would take more time and effort than he has left in him to finish it right.

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan
Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man’s incredible courage and resilience during one of history’s darkest hours.
Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He’s a normal Italian teenager—obsessed with music, food, and girls—but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior.
In an attempt to protect him, Pino’s parents force him to enlist as a German soldier—a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler’s left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich’s most mysterious and powerful commanders.
Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share.

Read “The Stonewall of the West” about Patrick Cleburne over Labor Day. Pretty good book.
Now reading “Grant and Twain” by Mark Perry. A fairly interesting easy read so far. One fun note I learned, Lincoln and his law partner nominated George Pickett to West Point. Almost had to be his law partner, but legend attributes it to Lincoln. Still a close enough link to be interesting.
