"Way too early" user review of Kindle Paperwhite - Signature Edition

Okay, Book Board, I was attempting to hold out for a refresh of the Oasis to the new 2021/2022 standards with all the new Amazon eReader releases over the past 18 months or so. There were silly rumors (mainly based on nothing but the desire for some tech journos and Youtubers to publish on the flimsiest of clickbait) deep into the Fall, including around the usual times that we would finally see a new Oasis. Thus far, there has been no new Oasis.
Well, my trusty Kindle Touch must have decided enough was enough and started to go out around the Holidays. It still works, but routinely crashes and restarts after over a decade of trouble-free service (and Mrs. Midnight's Kindle Keyboard is even older). When the February sale came around this year, I sprung for the current edition (2021 IIRC) Paperwhite Signature and, so far, it has been a massive upgrade. Just the USB C charging, dark mode and warm lighting alone were worth the change. All the other features are just lagniappe at this point.
So, not only can I recommend the Paperwhite, I can highly recommend the Signature edition. The main differences between the "plain" PW and Sig are 32gb (vs 8), adaptive lighting (vs manual adjustable) and Qi wireless charging.
Obviously, it remains to be seen if this device will deliver 10+ years of service like the Touch, but from a, "This is lighter, better, faster, more capable across the board" standpoint, I can confirm all those things.

Love my paper white, which is only a couple of years old at this point, but boy do I want the one you can scribble on.
A colleague of mine has a tablet that has the same look and feel as an oversized kindle but it’s only a notepad. I always wondered why kindle just didn’t add the feature to their upper end line. It’s the closest thing I’ve seen to sketching on a real notepad

After 8 years and hundreds of books, mine is still kicking arse.
Before the paperwhite, I was a huge reader that swore by hard copy books. The paperwhite changed everything for me.
Will always have one.

I like mine, but I let my wife use it. I don’t like that it’s kind of a bitch to get books on if you don’t buy them from Amazon. You have to email books to your Kindle email if not sourced from there.
I personally use an older Nook and download epubs. I can easily plug up the computer and drag n drop books into the Nook. I originally used the 7” Nook with e-ink and loved it for the same reason. The bigger Nook is their first jump into an LCD tablet and I like it.
I have 3 or 4 Kindle Fire tablets and don’t like that I’m heavily limited to Silk for my browsing.

Have you tried Calibre?

There are a number of YT videos on how to sideload Chrome onto a Fire HD. Obviously, that is going to fall into the intermediate-advanced skill area, so tread lightly.

I have an older Kindle and absolutely no problems with downloading free books from the library.

You can use the charging cable with your computer and drag books to it like it's a USB drive. Just put the MOBI files in the Documents folder. (You can create subfolders under Documents if you want.)
You can't do this with EPUB files, as it won't convert them the way the e-mail method will.

quote:I might need to give this a shot. My beloved 2015 Voyage was left on an airplane and I never recovered it. So I bought the fancy waterproof Oasis in 2021. I've been deeply disappointed ergonomically. It's weirdly asymmetric from left to right AND it's metal, so it's always cold and there's no good way to hold it. And even setting it on a surface is uneven. So weird.
