Came to this thread to post that. Great conversation and really interesting to hear Sanderson's perspective as a producer and about the adaptation of the book to the screen. Must watch I think.

Yep, I liked it a lot. Good info on the thought process behind it all.
I'm really happy it seems to have found a solid audience, I was nervous after the first couple episodes but think its found the right tone from Episode 3 and on so far.

Yeah the show is gradually improved. You can tell that they were forced into speeding up the beginning and didn't have much of a choice.
I do like Sanderson's perspective on it quit a bit.

Ya - and from his comments I am very curious to see where it goes from here in the next couple episodes.
If they are speeding up the white tower intrigue - there are a ton of different big events that could theoretically happen in the next episode honestly. Also brings the whole reasoning for shipping everything from Caemlyn into Tar Valon more into focus.
I bet we get some info on Siuan / Moiraine machinations here, which brings the whole Schism plot line into play. Seems way too early this season for me, but probably will happen in Season 2 given the current pace.

They are speeding up things like crazy, not really a fan of how fast they are going with episode 6, nor of several changes due to the impact they will have down the road. I'm afraid they are moving way too fast for non-readers, guess we will see on that.
Really don't see why Sanderson liked episode 6 the best. It's better than 5, but not as good as 4 was to me. I guess he just loves the white tower intrigue.
And little things like having Moraine open the ways rather than Loial for no particular reason are pretty annoying to me (way more than it should honestly).

I think dialogue wise, episode 6 is head and shoulders better than the rest of the episodes. Brandon said the script was a 10/10 so that may have been what he was referring to. Specific scenes were on GoT level for me.
For me, this was the first episode that felt like the wheel of time (the series as a whole) I know rafe is trying to adapt the series altogether as opposed to a book by book basis with the intention to bring the world/lore/political intrigue to the viewer at a much more accelerated pace.

5 and 6 have been hands down best for me and just felt right tone for the Wheel of Time I had in my head. I didn't mind 5 moving slow since it seemed to really hit the right character emotions (aside from the ritual with Lan which I had a different interpretation from others). Wasn't really as high on 4 as most people for some reason, but I've enjoyed every episode since 3.
Still moving too fast in some cases for me, but that is just the way it has to be. I would have loved to see more of a moment between Nyn / Egwene when Nyn was still trying to protect all of them but Egwene was ready to rise to what needed to be done.
I accepted the changes during the production period and I am having a great time trying to guess what certain changes means down the road and that kind of thing. It is kind of nice getting to theorize and guess about what is going to happen in the Wheel of Time again.

So my problem with Moraine opening the ways is... why the heck did she need loail to come if she could just open it? I'm hoping they at least make it where he has to navigate or open the "exit" door.
Good episode overall. But if they are going to change stuff at least make it logically consistent.

I think the whole reason he has to do it is for navigation.
The ways can be opened by anyone in the books IIRC, it doesn't have to be Ogeir - they just use the leaf key thing and not the power.

Obviously to navigate.
I loved the episode, mainly because it was the first that didnt "cut scene" too quickly like a made for TV show. Everything felt high value, and the dialogue was deliberate.
Loial is great to me... but better have big ears hiding under that hair. His voice and cadence are perfect.
Where the hell are everyone's weapons? Shouldn't Perrin be armed?

Perrin has his knife Matt gave him I assume - they ditched the massive battle axe.

-Episode 6 Spoilers-
I know people are tired of hearing people complain about book changes, but man, the changes are very frustrating. Moiraine crying and romanticizing in the Hall of the Tower is never something she would do in a million years. These are the least calm and "in control" Aes Sedai I would have expected. I did think her relationship with Siuan was going to be puffed up for the show.
Also, Mat not going in the ways... This is just because of Barney Harris leaving the show? Him being healed of the dagger looked cool, but definitely thought they were going to use the dagger healing to explain the new actor.
It also seemed to be really easy for Moiraine to do which definitely isn't true.
Outside of the characterization changes, I don't really understand the time allocation. It feels like they're focusing so much on minor characters to "hide" who the Dragon is that the boys have had nearly zero development. I think this episode was my least favorite.

Think about GoT season 1. Sean Bean was in a ton of scenes, because they had to give the bigger name actors more screen time to get the show going. Its negotiated out.
The Edmonds 5 are all unknown in the US - so havent quite earned their screen time just yet... more to come?

Moraine opens the ways in the books, right? With an avendesora leaf instead of the one power.
Loial is responsible for navigation.
Edit: I just went back and looked. Moraine opens the waygate. I swear half of peoples gripes are people misremembering the series cause its 14 fricking books long haha.
That being said, I hate how the waygate is just in an open field. I wish it could have at least been somewhat hidden. I thought that it could have worked very well how it was originally written in the books in someones basement (similar to hagrid opening the gateway to diagon alley in sorcerer’s stone)

I'm far enough into book 2 that they are long past the reveal that Moraine and the Amyrlin Seat go way back and are working together. However, I don't remember them mentioning that they were lovers. So, I have a few questions from that. Did I miss some implied relationship? Or does this relationship come up in later books? Or is this added for the show?
I vaguely remember them laughing about sharing a room on training and having a cat or something.

I think the first season is attempting to be much larger in scope than the first book which is why they’re focusing on worldbuilding and lore (what those scenes with smaller characters accomplish).
I personally agree with the decision to move away from the Tolkien-esque elements of EotW and instead try and bring in elements from later books because that’s what will draw in non-readers.

You find about their relationship in New Spring (prequel). It’s never as explicitly shown as it is in the books but it’s definitely implied.
