That being said, I hate how the waygate is just in an open field. I wish it could have at least been somewhat hidden. I thought that it could have worked very well how it was originally written in the books in someones basement (similar to hagrid opening the gateway to diagon alley in sorcerer’s stone)
There was also a waygate in the gardens at Tar Valon - but you could make the argument Moiraine wouldn't want to be seen by other Aes Sedai using it and she was exiled immediately prior, so that may have been the reasoning.
The Caemlyn waygate was really cool in that it was just in someone basement who didn't know what it was just a part of the wall.
I think the one in Fal Dara also is just in an open field outside the city.

Yeah, they definitely had a lesbian relationship while in the tower, having them be romantically linked to that point is new though, and kinda screws up Tower of Midnight a bit unless something major changes there. Siuan's other relationship is pretty pointless and no big loss though.

Ya, without mentioning much cause of spoilers Moiraine's thing comes out of left field once we start hearing about the letter constantly and we really don't need Gareth Bryne as a character - if we are lucky we can bail on or kill off Gawyn as well. If they change it up in ToM cause of this relationship, think it could be an improvement.

Jordan uses the term "pillow friends" in the book. I get the impression he is implying this to mean lovers, and that it's relatively rampant in The White Tower. I think it's his way of showing how close the "sisters" all become and that they are all each other have until becoming AS and getting Warders.

Yes, pillow friends means lovers.
I do think since Rafe just cannot help himself, he runs into a serious problem with making them current, overt lovers.
If they go with the Moiraine/Thom stuff later and they SHOULD...

Eh, they need to do a hell of a lot more groundwork ahead of time with Moiraine and Thom than in the books if its going to work. Not sure when that will happen as he will probably show back up next season - and then season 3 Moiraine will be in the Waste and Thom will hypothetically be with the girls in one of their adventures.
Spoilers if you haven't read whole series:
The only book Moiraine and Thom are both together on the page and in a relationship is the last one. There is some good dialogue and mutual respect and all early in the series - but looks like we will be missing that - and it jumps to undying love and marriage out of nowhere in fairly typical fashion for the series. It just doesn't seem very important

obviously they need to make that relationship more organic
But to have Moiraine go from an interacial lesbian relationship to a straight same race one will piss of some purple hairs

Meh, I dont think it will. Tbh I dont think we see them two together until the end of the series.
There could be a situation where moraine thinks siuan is dead (the whole stilling sequence) that leads her to grieve and look for a new love interest.
Edit: though now that I’m thinking about that, is that before or after moraine disappears?

Which is why people are reacting negatively. By making their relationship continue from the equivalent of students through decades to a full relationship, it throws out two character’s future husbands
And I loved Gareth and Siuan’s relationship. I’ll be gutted if they cut it.

Ya if they do the white tower schism in time for Moiraine to hear about it with Egwene, she could think Siuan is dead. Siuan hears about the doorway ter'angreal incident from Egwene and thinks she is dead.
Maybe you just have matt / thom / siuan be the ones to go save her or something - which helps gives siuan something to do after salidar storyline reaches its conclusion. You could even make it a group of 4 ands keep noal in.
Lots of ways you can do something interesting with it.

It's slightly before she disappears. Egwene talks to Moraine about it because Elayne/Nyn read some paper in the world of dreams if I remember correctly.
