I'm on Book 9 Winter's Heart

There are some interesting plotlines but some of this stuff is tough to slog through and I'm finding it difficult to continue picking the book up.

I understand that when you're doing the type of world-building that Jordan is doing here that you have to get into the politics of the different regions, but I honestly DGAF about how Elayne is going to make her claim to Andor.

Do the books pick up their pace soon, because the last couple have seemed fairly slow.

11 - 14 are really good

10 is really rough.

Just skim read for 9 and 10

OH and the last 150 or 200 pages of 9 is pretty legit as well, final sequence is one of the most memorable in series.

Although I am kind of surprised you didn't mention the hunt for Faile as the part you were most annoyed with.

Just don't pull your braid too hard

You are in the middle consolidation books where all of the disparate plot lines are getting narrowed down and aimed toward the beginning of the end. Each of the characters is becoming the final version of what they need to be to prepare for the last battle.

The "battle" for the Andor throne and Perrin's desperate search for Faile ,and his gathering of an army while growing into a great leader, can be grueling, but I actually enjoyed it more the second time around. I kept waiting for the part that had been a plod the first time reading, but really enjoyed the in-depth character development on reread.

Rand and Matt's versions are more entertaining.

Stick with it. Stuff is about to start going down!

Unfortunately, you are in the notorious "Slog" that every fan talks about. Seriously just go to any google WHeel of Time and "The Slog".

Books 8-10 are tough. They are slow and while a MAJOR event happens in Book 9, they are still tough to get through.

Book 10 is BY FAR the worst book in the series. You could read a recap and be fine. Nothing happens at all.

Books 11-14 are awesome though and a great finish, even if Sanderson didn't understand some of the characters like Mat.

I dunno if it was nit understanding or just his Mormon background preventing him from writing Mat.

I swear I think Book 10 and 11 were supposed to be one book, 10 is like 100% set up

Its just bad man. Especially back in the day if we were waiting in between books, and 10 comes out...

It was so so so boring. Literally nothing of any consequence happens.

I've got good news and bad news for you.

The ending of Book 9 is legit great and has a last effect on the plot for the rest of the series.

The bad news is that Book 10 is far worse than Book 9. I enjoyed the slice of life nature a little bit because I was attached to the characters, but it's not a good book.

The good news again is that Book 11-14 make it all worth it. I know it's challenging, but I do strongly recommend pushing through it.

Good to know! I'm waiting on book 11 on Libby. I agree that reading Crossroads of Twilight was a chore and I found myself skimming though parts.

Definitely you are through the annoying part though. Book 11 is really strong and ties up a lot of the plot points from 10 which didn't ever reach a resolution.

I've read the series already, but I'm now going through the audiobook versions. I'm on book 7 right now. It is such a great series. It's crazy to see how much Jordan foreshadowed what happens in the series in earlier books. Not looking forward to the slog I'm about to run through but I know whats on the other end of it thankfully and will power through.

I'm excited there are more fans on here than I thought.

Hopefully everyone will watch the Amazon series coming out in November.

I get what you are saying and agree, but not about this part. Elayne's claim to the throne is a critical storyline to the structure of the entire political landscape. My issue is more in how much he gets into the minutiae of things and loses track of the narrative. He's not as bad as Stephen King in this regards, but it reminds me of King.

I am enjoying these books overall (I too am in the middle of book 9), but I do have a difficult time keeping up with the cast of characters. I think he is terrible at creating names: too many sound or read alike, so they get jumbled together way too often (Lan, Rand, Tam... Elayne, Egwyne... there are many other examples). The other issue I have is his method of introducing new characters. He writes them into the prose as if they have always been there and we know who they are. I find myself having to stop and look up characters quite often to see who is who, and many times I learn this is the first time they are introduced.

I think when you are writing a series with the amount of characters involved in the story as he is doing, then you need to take special care in making sure they stand out in their own way so that we the reader understands what is going on. Too many times I zone out due to not knowing who is who. (I think, despite his writing flaws, Jim Butcher does a great job of this. He writes some small snippets when bringing back old characters to refresh our memories of who they are)

The Elayne story line is one of my least favorite.

It goes on for if I recall correctly, 5 books. It is totally worthless.

In the show, it will likely be one scene, and they will just eliminate all of the caemlyn political machinations

The Perrin/Faile/Shaido plotline is just the absolute WORST though.

Really? Goes to show just how different an audience can be. Perrin/Faile is my favorite part of the books. I find the Nyneve/Elayne journey to be annoying and boring. Some of their moments are critical to the story, but the overall journey to get to those moments are trivial.

I do like the Elayne throne plot line. I am at the point where she finally (spoiler), and to me it is getting very good. I do like political gamesmanship though, which is why I enjoyed ASOIAF so much. So I guess I enjoyed the Morgase story points better than the Elayne, because I found most chapters with EandN to be a chore to get through.

Let me just say you are literally the only person ever to say any of that.

I am somewhat active throughout the years on some of the WOT boards, and the Perrin/Faile/Shaido plotline that goes on for several of the later books is universally despised. Pretty sure even Sanderson commented that RJ had a lot of issues with it over the years and had to figure out how to end it.

The Elayne coronation stuff is just flat out boring.

SPOILERS

It could have been ended in 1 scene. Elayne rides into Caemlyn and is crowned Queen. THe end. No one would have questioned it.

END SPOILER

I've considered starting this series in preparation for the show but man it's a lot of books and always hear bad things about a decent chunk of the books.

I would say only 2 books basically are bad. The entirety of book 10, and then a large chunk of book 9 with some weak stuff from a couple earlier books thrown in to equal 2 whole books. I made that super confusing, but anyway, the point is the vast majority of the series is pretty great.

Being honest, I dont hate the Perrin/Faile stuff as much as most do, but I cant see any scenario where its a positive.

The Elayne stuff is worse though because it takes up much more time throughout the series.

Not sure how much of a hot take this is with the fanbase, but I'm in the camp that Sanderson basically salvaged the series from being where ASoIaF is now with GRRM. Maybe Jordan would have actually finished things if he stayed alive, but I dont think he would have ended the series anywhere close to as good as Sanderson did, the Mat hiccup notwithstanding.

Do it!

Amazing world building and good characters.

Its one of the GOAT fantasy series .

Just know you are getting into 14 books and its more about characters than plot at times. It does meander and they are very long books full of minute detail.
