quote:I keep telling myself I’ll take a break after the current book because I’ve read 1-9 straight. After the way 9 ended, I had no choice but to jump right into 10. Damn that insufferable beer can.
Found the series when it was brand new, listen to them all. Rc bray makes is much better. It’s a bit derivative, but thr characters are well written.

Been doing some stand alones alongside Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Was looking for some different/under the radar stuff and it has been a whole lot of meh.
Floralinda and the 40 Flight Tower. Meh. 3/5
Big, Little. Gross. First DNF for me in AGES. Wanted to throw the book away. 1/5
The Land of Laughs. Decent. Good ending but you don't get any type of fantasy elements until you're almost at the end of the book. 3.5/5
Not technically a stand alone but I think I'm going Kings of the Wyld next.
But currently loving The Eye of the Bedlam Bride. Maybe my favorite since book 1.

I think you’ll enjoy kings of the Wyld. It’s basically a dnd campaign written out in story form. It’s a lot of fun.

Kings of the Wyld and its sequel were both awesome. Has humor along with action mixed in. I need to start my Carl reread soon, forgot if it was here or a fb thread but I’m finishing Spellslinger series this week. It has been a good not great series (liked the Greatcoats more) how was his other series if anyone’s started it?
Next either starting Carl reread of doing Empire of the Vampire. Got it from the library heard the trilogy was top stuff.

Finally finished the Empire of the Vampire trilogy by Jay Kristoff. I'll admit that, due to the length of the books, it felt like a bit of a slog at the end. But that's MAINLY because I really wanted to get to the end to see how it all concluded. So the, quite lengthy, descriptions and such kind of bogged things down a bit. That being said... the pay off at the end was excellent.
Recommend this one for fans of grimdark, dark fantasy, vampires, and interesting narrative tropes (two different unreliable narrators telling their stories to someone who has them imprisoned with simultaneous action taking place in the present time that the story is being recorded as well as in the flashbacks the unreliable narrators are telling from the past). Anyway, the whole thing pulls together, and it's pretty great. But... they're big books and there are 3 of them.
If things like... an 800 year old vampires that looks like a young child and make people's bodies explode or weird sex scenes between celtic werewolves and half-breed vampires involving lots of.. biting.. turn you off. Then probably stay away.

Grimdark is fine. Pretty sure Malazan desensitized me to a lot lol. Couple others seriously recommended. Prob gonna do them and then Carl reread. Thanks for the notes

Has he said how many books are planned for the series? I’m pretty paranoid about googling it because I don’t want to see any spoilers.

I think there will be 20.
It's gotten pretty formulaic at this point but I still love them.

I have an aversion to starting any unfinished series unless they are on Kindle Unlimited these days due to so many high profile authors flaking out, so I've been waiting till he's finished his Malevolent seven and Court of Shadows book series to read them, despite loving Greatcoats and really liking Spellslinger (Parfax is an awesome character to me).
It's also why I hadn't read Kristoff's Empire of the dawn books despite loving his first trilogy of books. I'll have to pick that up after I finish Anthony Ryan's Covenant of steel trilogy now that it's finished.

Yeah, not much I've read was worse than the character that suffered the hobbling in the second to last book.
His Kharsa books are another I'm waiting till they are finished to start.

Just saw, was coming here to post that. Sad. Hyperion is one of Mrs. Iwy's all time favorite series'.

Started Project Hail Mary this week. Half way through and its good. May read The Martian next and Red Rising afterwards.

It doesn't have the reputation of the Hyperion Cantos (which, fair), but Simmons' Ilium/Olympos duology is a great read.

Just finished Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Really fun Sci-fi with an interesting premise (lots of evolution and alternate technology). There are 3 books out, and I believe some more planned. I've started the second book, but a lot of people give the sequels mixed reviews.
The 1st book works well as a self-contained standalone, so don't engage the "incomplete" series rule that a lot of us work off of these days.

Finished Project Hail Mary. Guess I'll go watch the movie when it comes out.
Almost half way through Dark Matter. Really interesting so far.

It can be repetitive at times, especially with how they solve problems with monkey brained ideas. Hasn’t hindered my enjoyment and this a-hole knows how to end a book with a cliffhanger. I’ve accepted that I won’t be reading other books until I finish this series. Only 6 to go.

Tapped out on the second book in the Children of Time series after getting about 60% through. It just wasn't doing it for me. I still recommend the first book (and it works fine as a standalone).
Started Between Two Fires. Not REALLY fantasy... but it has enough "magical" elements in it to probably fall into historical fantasy. Anyway, loving it so far. Like 30% through after starting it yesterday afternoon. Could definitely see this one being made into a movie with the actor for Sandor Clegane from GoT being the protagonist.

Anybody read this one? Saw some pretty glowing reviews on it. Nervous on starting a fantasy with only one book out yet for fear of getting burned. But synopsis sounds great and I have to say, that's a pretty epic book cover.
