Saw and liked the movies, but never read the books or wanted to - until now. Just finished the Sorcerer's Stone. It was fun. So much terrific characterization and amazing detail in such simple prose. Starting Chamber of Secrets now. Enjoying the heck out of this series - worth the wait.

They'll make you dislike the changes in the movies. One in particular in regards to Dumbledore's demise. I also didn't like the changes to Harry/Ginny's first kiss.

First 4 are amazing fun reads. shite gets real in 5-7 and Quiditch and House Cups become a tad less important lol. As a kid I really enjoyed reading about the day to day life at Hogwarts.

I didn't read the series or watch any of the movies until about 4 years ago. I was trying to get my oldest into reading and the ploy I utilized was reading the first book together, then we'd watch the movie. Needless to say, she didn't make it past the third book but I couldn't put the books down. Very well written. And I like that the books get more mature as the kids age.

Red them in my late 20s about 7 years ago. Thought they were absolutely fantastic. I thought the best thing about them was the development of Harry as a teenager.

My biggest gripe was I've always felt the end/ final showdown and aftermath was a bit rushed.

The movies are okay but the books are where the magic's at, no pun intended. I grew up with the books and felt like both the characters and the writing grew up with me over the years, with more complex writing, characters, and themes evolving as I matured.

Agree they are great books for any age. I got my oldest son to read them after seeing a few of the movies and he loved them. AR points in school for him like a mofo.

I agree the endings felt rushed and I didn't like the movie final battle with Harry and Voldemort. Hated no one witnessed it like the book, he just walks back inside like "yeah I killed Voldemort of anyone cares!"

Not book 7. The last 24 hours takes up something like the last 11 chapters.

I was 13 when I read the first book. It was the school year after the 4th book was released. I had avoided them until then but needed points for accelerated reader at my school. Started with the first and read all four before the end of the year. Got the last 3 on their launch days and finished them within 48 hours.

I love how the books become more mature as the characters age.

When I first started dating the girl I would eventually marry, she asked me to read the first book. She knew I was an avid reader, but I really wasn't interested in what I saw as a kids book. But, wanting to impress her, I told her to let me borrow it.

I finished the first book in two days. I asked her for the next one. Finished it in 4 days. I asked for the 3rd book, finished it in a week and a half.

When I asked for the 4th book, finding out that it wasn't out yet depressed me. I still re-read the whole series every couple of years.

He was a little, angsty bitch as a 15 year old... Which is probably a really good interpretation of most 15 year olds.

Be prepared for some large differences between how you would rank the books vs how you would rank the movies.

Yup. All the movies after Goblet were all crap.

The dumbledore interpretation in Goblet was absolute shite. I may be in the minority but I liked the 6th one alright.

Honestly, the movies did a horrible job of fleshing out the relationship between Harry and Dumbledore.

I didn't like Harry and Ginny's relationship in either the books or movies. Just so forced.

And the Ginny in the movies was just not attractive at all.

Movie Ginny looked so much like movie Lily it made Oedipus uncomfortable.

I read the first one in 7th grade because it was assigned. I remember liking it, but never moved to the next one for whatever reason. Then, about 8 or so years later, I'm bored living at home during summer break in college. I decided to reread Sorcerer's Stone after watching the movie. I finished it in 2 days and was instantly hooked. I finished all seven books that summer. The next summer I started ASOIAF. After reading those books two times through, I still have not found a book series that hooks me like the those two did back in college/early adulthood.
