Which is the better series? I checked out The Bourne Identity today and should start it next week. I was really debating whether to go with Bourne or Reacher and my library made it simple because Bourne Identity was checked in and Killing Floor wasn't.

I read the first several books of the Reacher series and was not impressed. The Bourne books were written in the 1970s so are a little dated, but better than Reacher IMHO

That won't really bother me. Looking forward to trying this series.

I felt like the original Bourne series was more in-depth character and plot wise. Reacher is good, but it takes 20 books to get the depth that Bourne reached in 3.

Both are really fun reads though.

Bourne by a long shot. Reacher is a cartoon character.

It's definitely Bourne here, Ludlum pretty blows any other action/spy type authors away.

I'd suggest Jack Higgins (Eagle has Landed) over Reacher as well. Though Reacher is entertaining.

The Reacher novels are feast or famine. When they’re good they’re excellent. Child has a tendency to make him infallible, though. Reacher rarely makes mistakes, and when he does he gets out of them because that’s what Reacher does.

The Bourne novels are not the Bourne movies. If you go in looking for that you’ll be disappointed.

I finished Bourne Identity today. Excellent read. I think I prefer it being dated. The old spycraft is more interesting than modern day computer/electronics spying.

I also enjoyed the character development. Looking forward to Bourne Supremacy and another showdown with Carlos

Depends on what you're looking for.

Reacher if you just want something fun that you can breeze through.

Bourne gets quite a bit deeper, but is still really good. A slower read.

As someone already said, the Bourne movies are not the books. The movies cut out a critical HALF of the plot.

The original Bourne books were great reads, going back to the 70's. Now they come across the same as James Patterson's books, mass produced for commercial purposes. I much prefer Reacher by far.

Bourne books are better IMO. Teacher books are fine but Bourne books take it to another level.

I read all of the Jack Ryan books years ago. My favorite wasn't really a Jack Ryan, but the John Clark story, Without Remorse. Great character.

Agreed, I think that is Clancy's best book. The cardinal of the Kremlin isn't far behind though.

Not many of those big time - long time writers write their own stuff anymore. Patterson, Cussler, Clancy ( didn’t he pass away ?). They just put their name on the cover in big letters with a “ co-author” in smaller letters. You can tell the difference, too. Not even close to the same.

I agree with the previous comment that the original Bourne books, going back to the 70's, are by far the best. But, yea, the James Patterson style, mass production, has completely watered down the quality of the earlier books. These movies are nothing like the original books as well. I like Reacher as well, though. His persona of never losing has been there from the beginning & I just accept that as who & what he is as a character.

Looks like life has been breathed into this thread from a while back. Pretty timely; I’ve read four or five of the Reacher books in the past couple of months. They’re very easy to breeze through and I’d say that they are a guys version of chick-lit.

Decent action, some intriguing story, and quick moving. Oddly enough, I’m in the middle of Night School right now and I’m struggling a little to get through it, even though it’s a pretty good one.

Reachers infallibility, is an easy mechanism to not let the story lines get too complicated and intertwined. I wouldn’t call it lazy, but certainly convenient to keep the pace of the books up. I guess it at least makes him a unique character in the space.

End of the day, they’re worth reading a couple. If you’re a fast reader you can get through one in just a few days of very casual reading. Bonus is that they are plentiful in used book stores as well; so you can buy a few for under $10.
