Heart wrenching books

I finished A Little Life last week and I must have sobbed through a third of the book. Before that, it was The Heart’s Invisible Furies, which I cried through, as well. A Thousand Splendid Suns destroyed me, as did the Kite Runner. What are some heart wrenching books you’ve read?

Father and Son by Larry Brown. The subtlety of the tragedy was so well done it really did stay with me.

Of Mice and Men. Heartbreaking.

I’ll second Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns

A lot of southern gothic is heartbreaking. Pick anything by Brown, McCarthy, Hannah, Gay, etc. They’re all fantastic.

Agreed. Death of Sweet Mister by Daniel Woodrell is also a very sad book.

The Kite Runner had some pretty fricked up parts to it. But even though it's been about 30 years since I read it, The Prince of Tides takes the cake for most depressing book I've ever read. Maybe it was because of a recent suicide in my family, but that book really hit me hard.

The Battle of Algul Siento was a tough read after 20 years or so.

Stoner by John Williams is pretty sad, in its own way. It is one of my favorite novels of all time, though.
