GOT Books

After watching the series, I decided to read the entire GOT books. I started at the beginning with "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms". I've really enjoyed them all and I'm on the last book "A Dance with Dragons" and I'm really struggling. It just seems boring AF and dragging on. Anyone else struggle with the last book?

The good news is, after ADwD, you never have to worry about reading another ASoIaF book again.

Dance and Feast were split up for some reason by George. If you google boiled leather read through it leads you read them side by side until
They converge about 65% dance. That helped on rereads at least. I don’t remember dance being sloggy but it’s been 6 ish years. Feast I had a hard time first time through. Remember The prologue in the second book I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

I refuse to start reading a series that I know will never be finished.

The fourth book would be more of what I would consider a struggle book, and the worst of the series. The fifth was a slight step up from the 4th, but both are weak compared to the excellence of the first three.

As much as I hate to defend George for anything given how much of a lame douchebag he's turned out to be with this series (and that he'll never finish it), but there would be no way possible for him to have released it as one book. Feast was 750+ pages, and Dance was 1050+, no publisher could print that large of a book, even back then.

I've read them and listened to them on audiobooks. The last two are definitely the weakest, but I would agree with the person who said the last one is better than the 4th book. I didn't struggle to read them because I was reading during the show and back then I actually thought he was going to finish so I was excited to see where the story was going. So yea, frick GRRM lol.

Yeah, unlike the first two it was a horrible slog. Someone actually counted all the minor characters in each book and it spiraled out of control as the series progressed. Way too many minor, uninteresting characters by Dance with Dragons, and some boring story lines. Martin was out of ideas and writing filler.

Yes, with the minor characters. Totally ridiculous. I guess I'll finish it just because I've come this far, but geez its tough.

I think it's the minority opinion but I personally liked Dance better than Feast.
Though Cersei's prison time is probably my least favorite chapters of the entire series. Just chapter after chapter of Cersei begging, crying, and complaining. It's like my God ok lets get this over with. I've read the books multiple times and those are the ones I struggle with the most.
But congrats on finishing the series, I hope you liked the ending

I think I will reread later on. I will definitely reread "Fire & Blood" about the Targaryen history...that was a hard one to follow.

I've reread the books a couple of times. I am just as frustrated as everyone else that nothing will get finished. However, I really enjoy the rereads just because of how much you pick up when you know things. Many of these minor characters are tied to larger characters, were mentioned previously that just wasn't obvious the first time, etc. So, this doesn't help your current frustration, but it is an aspect that makes these books enjoyable a second time.

It does wax and wane for me at times (I agree with iwy that it's worse in Feast for me because of how it was all split up) in terms of dragging.
Also, back in 2014 several of us started up a thread to talk about all of the theories. It's over 1,000 pages now but some fun stuff in there.
