Aegon already had Griff helping him out, probably figured Dany was fricked without him
Yeah, he needed the dragons, but I'm not sure if word would have reached Illyrio by that time. I don't see why Illyrio would have even hesitated to send Barristan to Aegon, unless he already knew the dragons had hatched. As Tywin said: "Yes, the man was old, but the name of Barristan the Bold still has meaning in the realm, He lent honor to any man he served." If Barristan had ridden beside Aegon, no one would ever second guess his claim and tons would side with him instantly upon hearing Barristan was with him.

The Maester thread from the show last night is beginning to bite our rhyme...
Posted on 5/12/14 at 4:19 pm to 19
Yeah, we need some rules for that. Maybe leave Maester thread open until midnight on Monday night after an episode, then close and direct back to Crackpot thread.
That may not be what you meant by the "Maester thread beginning to bite our rhyme", but it is something that I was thinking with people posting similar stuff on both threads. This thread dropped to like page 4 today; that should never happen!

Eh, I think the Maester threads can easily be commented on for a few days.

So Rickard was married to his cousin??

Apparently. It's always been a mystery on who he was married to.

Yea it seems like knowing the dragons had hatched would be best reason. Especially knowing Mormont was spying or had recently stopped, because if someone else got those dragons then Varys/Illyrio's plans would be over with

That's kind of a letdown. I didn't think the Northerners married their relatives, even cousins. I thought the Old Gods looked down upon that?

Oathkeeper and widow's wail are melted down again and forged together to create lightbringer (lightbringer was first tempered in water, then in a lion, then in nissa nissa) - perfect parallel. essentially, ice becomes fire
That's cool. I think there is significance to the color of the blades (ripples of red and black). Also think that it could be possible for Melisandre to sacrifice herself by playing the part of Nissa Nissa since she has the whole fiery heart thing going, not to mention that she was on a mission to find AA to begin with. If the blade is first tempered in a lion, that doesn't bode well for Jaime or Cersei. Does Brienne use Oathkeeper to kill Jaime in some tragic way? Or maybe Jaime kills Cersei with Widow's Wail. That would be pretty clever considering the name of the sword and the fact that it is now Tommen's.

This thread should be about the books though and the other about the show.
If we are still discussing show stuff then it goes there.

True, but those lines are getting more and more blurred as the show gives us more stuff.
The discussion on the two swords and happens going forward is a book discussion, though.

My simple minded predictions:
1. Bran becomes the most powerful character of the series (probably pretty obvious). He's already talked through a tree which no one has ever done. So he is basically a god, which no other character appears to have the ability for that ever to happen.
2. Jon is not dead. Like I mentioned in the EP 4 thread, almost all of of Martins main characters die from someone else's POV, not their own.
2b. It's either Melisandra who saves him, or we get the first POV from a white walker. It would take time for this to happen, so the surprise of that would either come at the end of book six or possibly book seven.
3. Melisandra and Stannis are finished. She read the prophecy wrong so I don't see the need to keep that story forever.
4. Dany makes it to westeros. Those in kings landing are way to nonchalant (spelling?) about it so that comes as an obvious book reader surprise to them. Battle ensues.
5. Arya makes it Westeros (before Dany), and kills a number of people on her list, if not all that she finds remain. I love her so much and nothing better happen to her. One of my top 5 fiction characters of all time. Right up there with Sam from LOTR and Huck Finn from Huck Finn. Can't think of my next two favorites. Ok I'm getting off track. Lector is up near the top too probably.
6. Like I say, I'm not all that smart, so I think the series closes like the title of the series is. A song of ice and fire, a story of life and death, ying/yang yada yada. Dany/Dargons vs N. of the wall. Or it could be that he titles thr because that's where the two main stories take place, not a vs type scenario.
7. This new Daario sucks. It's like he doesn't know how to be cool but yet he has to try and act like the coolest dude on the planet. not a prediction, I know.
8. J Reed sucks. He's looks like he's about to kill over so that's good news. Bran don't be gay and somehow save him. If I was a rapper, might rap name might be J Reed though. Again, not a prediction. EXCEPT THAT MY RAP CAREER IS ABOUT TO TAKE OFF J REED Y'ALL.

Daario sucks no matter who they cast to play him.
I think Jojen was perfect casting though. And he's supposed to look like shite at this point and his condition gets worse when they enter the cave.

Grand maester pycelle = glass
Varys = hugo
Carson = littlefinger
Ladytiger = cersei or theons salt wench, cant decide
Bluegrassbelle = brienne

Glass is way younger than Pycelle
.
And I'd much rather be Cersei than the Salt Wench
