He's from Florida. Saw him play HS ball here in Orlando. Yes, we have LOTS of black bears. It can be an issue in some neighborhoods. Mostly in the northern areas of Metro Orlando from the Wekiva Forest.

Seeing bears in FLorida isn't particularly odd at all. They've got a native population in the thousands. They're somewhat regularly seen in several non-mountainous areas of Alabama too. Our biggest population isn't in the northern mountains, it's in the Mobile delta area.

Moma bears did NOT turn and run, she backed up, keeping her cub protected. Had he approached the cub from the other side of the car, and gotten in between the cub and its Moma, all bets would be off. Dude got lucky.
