Steve Spurrier Hilariously Zings Texas For Leaving Big 12
© Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports
Legendary coach Steve Spurrier was asked for his thoughts about Texas and Oklahoma during a Wednesday Zoom call with reporters. His answer was classic...
quote:

“I can understand Texas jumping over,” Spurrier said. “They get to play Texas A&M again. … They can’t win the Big 12 anyway. I think they’ve only won two in the last 30 years or so. So I can see Texas jumping over — more money, playing A&M, this, that and the other…”

Spurrier said he’s somewhat surprised that the Sooners are making the move to the SEC.

“They are the champion of the Big 12. I mean, they win it almost every year. They’ve won what, 4, 5 in a row, something like that?” Spurrier said. “I just don’t think they are going to come over to the SEC and win with any regularity the way they win the Big 12. Their fans, they may say, ‘Yeah, now we can beat Alabama and LSU and all these dudes.’ It may not happen like that.”

“It’s obviously more money,” Spurrier continued. “I feel sad for the other (Big 12) schools – Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State and all those guys. They obviously need those two schools there. But, looks like it’s gonna happen. Maybe it will work out for the best.”

Still don't get it. It's the SouthEASTERN Conference. What's Southeast about UT or OU? Nothing. Great schools and great traditions but not in the Southeast.

I don’t think the geographical aspects are too strict.

Outside of money, OU coming here helps them with the things they struggle with most, recruiting on defense. A lot of those southern defensive guys that don't go to Clemson, the SEC, or Ohio St, are very few and far between. Now Oklahoma can say that you'll get to go to all these Big games in your region and compete with the best. Trust me, this'll convince some of those guys willing to be a 3rd string high 4 or 5 star on Bama for a year, to head to Oklahoma, and then all it takes is winning after that. I think they have the right DC, just need the bodies.

His take is from a bygone era. The OBC was more focused on winning championships and not the money. That’s pretty clear in his interview. UT and OU are moving solely for the payout. He’s a purist and the game has opted to cash in. Massive respect for him. (Just a side note: I have no doubt he would agree with the players getting compensated. He is very pro-equity in that regard)

Both schools will have to get significantly better on the gridiron to compete on a weekly basis in the SEC.

In other words, he disagrees with this move.

We miss you OBC. And he’s correct. OU is in for a rude awakening if they think they are going to beat Bama and LSU regularly.

Young fans out there who may not really know who this is, go to youtube and check out his trash talking videos. He was and is still relentless. The best parts, his trash talk was all facts. What did he say about Peyton Manning coming back for his senior year? He wants to be the 3 time mvp of the Citrus Bowl? Lol
