If it's retired, it's retired. Apparently USC has asked their Heisman Trophy winning alum Matt Leinart to let an incoming player wear his number multiple times...
quote:

“There have been multiple times where people at USC have asked me if I would un-retire my jersey for some five-star prospect,” Leinart said. “And do you want to know what I told those guys straight up? I said absolutely f****** not. I am never going to un-retire my jersey for some random dude who, by the way, now could wear number 11 and transfer after a year.”

quote:

“That kid, probably the chance of him staying at USC in two years is slim anyway,” Leinart said. “So it ain’t happening, bro. I’m keeping that up there forever. And you can call me selfish. I don’t give a s***.”

I'm with Leinart on this one.

Leinart presumably didn’t demand that his number be retired. It was an honor given to him. You really shouldn’t even ask if you’re the school. It’s disrespectful to the player and the program’s history.

Pre transfer portal, I would see this as an honor. Now, I agree with him that
the guy might be there a year and transfer

I say if you win the Heisman no one should wear your number again. No one at LSU should/will wear 5, 9, or 20 again tbh

I can understand that. Especially the way the portal is going. He's earned it. I did hear Aikman say on the Ticket in DFW that he was asked to un-retire his UCLA number and he didn't care. But he has a lot of skins on the wall so it isn't as big of deal to him. If a kids decision to come to your school is impacted by the number he wears....how important is that decision to him and how committed will he be.

He's absolutely correct. He paid his dues and stayed there as a 5th year QB. Most of today's top recruits have no intention of doing that- and in most cases are only loyal to the dollar, not the school. He right to stand his ground. They should have a little more respect for the guy who led them through arguably their greatest run in school history.

No harm in USC asking, one time. After one time they shouldn’t ask again. Bc there are some players who are not very sentimental and might really not care. Think about the players who have sold their Heismans.

Why ask? Just do it.

They can’t without his permission

They can’t? Will Matt have a cause of action against the college if they let someone wear 11. Or does it just make them look shitty?

They absolutely could do it without asking him. It's just not worth the negative publicity.

Maybe when he picks up the phone and says Hello, don't say "Is this NFL bust Matt Leinert?

well put, mate - I couldn’t agree more!

Dumbasses should have not retired it. Didn’t imagine another stud QB would want 11 again? Lol.

Retiring numbers is dumb anyway.
