LSU head coach Lane Kiffin spoke with reporters after practice on Tuesday and explained his reasoning for not having spring games anymore.
quote:

"I just stopped the spring game a few years ago," Kiffin said.

"At one point, it was on TV, so you are giving team film away, but then there was another portal coming too, so you’re basically giving people an evaluation of your players, especially your newer ones, and how they’re doing."

"And then it became a financial piece, with how much you’re investing in the players and how significant injuries are, and looking at the big picture of that. Just feel like it's not worth it."

"It's no different than the NFL... in the middle of the spring, they don't have a tackling scrimmage."

Hes right. With the portal there's no positive to a spring game. Just have a family day or something and have the guys out for kids to meet

It’s a shame. I don’t blame him for the logic, but I loved the spring game. Get an insight of how the team is doing, give the students a fun spring taste of the season. It’s a shame the game has evolved to such an NFL type level where the risk of injury (because of how much we’re paying players) outweighs the fun spring games used to be

Agreed. Lots of good memories watching spring games and being so excited to track every little play to see who might be the next best thing. Sad to see it go but it’s necessary

They’ve neutered the spring game so much the last decade or so it was tough to really get a gauge on anything, probably should have done away with it long ago.

Bowl games. Spring games. So many things that made college football fun and unique are being phased out right before our eyes. All because of money (NIL/transfer portal). So very sad.
It used to be great to see your new players and improved veterans perform well in the spring game and dream that your team was going to make waves that fall. And your team ALWAYS won spring. Take me back.

Certainly in a time when they're adding more and more, bowl games aren't being phased out.

Bowl games with actual rosters are gone with the exception of playoff games. Players have suddenly become bigger than the game.

It’s gonna really take away some joy from the ranters who love to bitch about either the offense or defense sucking while playing against our own team.

I do like a skill competition type thing, with a fan day on a baseball home weekend. Doesn’t have to be contact. Just something fun.

Lane is right but it’s a shame. Just like losing national signing day. The college game is just changing for the worse.

In today’s transfer portal environment, it no longer makes sense to publicly showcase LSU’s schemes or evaluate player performance in a Spring Game. Unfortunately, the Spring Game has become a casualty of the portal era, much like the Bayou Bash.

Keep the Spring Game. Just don't have it televised.

I do love a chance to go down with my buds and talk some ball in the off-season while eating a good steak and having some bourbon. However, coach is right on everything he said. I believe someone broke his collarbone during the last spring game I watched.

LSU fans have never really turned out in mass for the spring game. There is a crowd but nothing compared to many other schools. Too much going on in Baton Rouge and New Orleans in the spring compared to Tuscaloosa for example. Also, to me the most important point is that the games are now televised and every team in the country can watch your spring game and evaluate your players and team. No Thanks. It's a waste of time and risk.

I agree with him 100%. I always thought Spring games were meaningless, anyway.
