Incoming freshman defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, the Tigers' highest-ranked prospect in the 2017 signing class will enroll at LSU next week, but won’t be eligible to play in 2017, according to The Advocate:
quote:

The NCAA at least partially denied Shelvin’s eligibility for this season, and the highly decorated nose tackle from Lafayette will use what coach Lewis Cook called an “academic redshirt” in 2017. He will be on scholarship and can practice with the team but cannot play in any games, said Cook, the longtime coach at Notre Dame in Crowley.

An LSU spokesman declined comment Friday night.

The NCAA denied Shelvin’s status several days ago, and the governing body shot down the school’s appeal this morning, Cook said. Cook was not completely sure why the NCAA denied Shelvin, a 6-foot-2, 380-pounder ranked the No. 1 player in the state in the 2017 class.

Honestly, this would never happen at Bama. Why do we play by the rules?

Just coming to post this, I am so sick of the SEC (and REC) screwing over anyone who is not Bama.

What's up with the stupid down votes. Name us ONE Bama recruit who was #1 in their class who got denied, I am waiting. Hell, Lacy was ruled impossible by the LSU staff to get in and he played at Bama THAT YEAR.

Agree with all of you intelligent gentlemen. This same thing doesn't happen at Bama. We all know this.

The NCAA is a dictatorship that needs to end. They drag their feet all summer, impacting this kids live, and then they make a decision and THEY are the ones to decide the appeal? That's a great system they have right there! The NCAA stopped being about the student-athlete about 100 years ago. With the information age, it's just more obvious.

So wtf does this mean? He took the classes he needed to take and was able to enroll at LSU but he can't play football because of what?

Because Nick said no, he can't play this year.

I'm so sick of the NCAA having double standards and treating anyone not named Alabama like a D-2 school. This just goes to show that if you play by the rules in this modern day and age, you get burnt. F*** the NCAA mafia.

Tyler, don't let this get you down. You have a great opportunity to achieve academically and at the same time practice with a top tier athletes. Keep your nose the grindstone in both. GEAUX TIGERS!!!

I agree with all of you. If you pass your requirements to qualify for enrollment, how are you not able to play football on game day? Makes no sense! Either you're in or you're out, right? It's like they're dangling a carrot in front of this kid, and jerking it away at the last minute. These NCAA fat cats should be shot at sunrise! (An expression, not a plan, to the PC police out there.)

Exactly my thought as I was reading the article. Since Miles isn't handicapping us and Coach O won't play ball with the SEC and throw games, they decide to screw with our top recruits. Pathetic...

I'm just glad he made it to campus. He could of been a non qualifier, went to JUCO, and then there would of been a risk of him choosing to go somewhere else.
