The College Football Playoff Board of Managers announced Thursday that they will expand to 12 teams beginning in the 2024-25 season.
quote:

The first round of the playoff in 2024 will take place the week ending Saturday, December 21, at either the home field of the higher-seeded team or at another site designated by the higher-seeded institution. (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7, and No. 9 at No. 8.) The specific game dates, likely late in that week, will be announced later.

For the 2024 and 2025 seasons, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games will be played in bowls on a rotating basis. The 2024 quarterfinals will take place in the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, while the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl will host the Playoff Semifinals. The 2025 quarterfinals will take place in the Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, while the Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl will host the Playoff Semifinals. Specific dates for all quarterfinal and semifinal games will be announced at a later time.

The national championship games will be played January 20, 2025, in Atlanta, and January 19, 2026, in Miami.

"On behalf of the Management Committee and the Board of Managers, this is thrilling," Hancock added. "It's been a long process, but we are pleased that more teams and more students will have the opportunity to compete for the national championship beginning in the 2024 season. A new era of college football is about to begin. I look forward to it." Read more.

Finally! Coastal Carolina wins the national championship in 2025 as a 12 seed. Can’t wait!

These weak arse teams from the big12 and pac10 *think* they want to compete for a NC with the big boys. They're going to find out that its a bit different when you actually have to win it on the field

It's a professional sport now and the college kids are getting paid. I'm not complaining about extra games!

Glad we're getting a round of on campus games but really the first 2 rounds should be on campuses. The top 4 teams will miss out on a lot of revenue from not getting to host a playoff game. But at least we will get to visit some new campuses more often. Northern schools gonna eat in the winter though

I doubt the school keeps the money. They probably will get paid for hosting. But not at a profit.

Agreed. For those reasons and more. I know the 1-4 seeds would prefer to have a bye rather than home-field advantage, but it just seems kind of weird that the top-seeded teams wouldn't get to play a home game during the playoffs, while the 5-8 seeds do. Also, they need to keep the bowl games restricted to just the semi-finals. Bowl games should be a once-a-season type of thing. It's going to render the bowl game concept even more asinine than the playoffs already made them. Maybe it's just me, but it's going to sound stupid to hear "Tonight, Team X and Team Y will square off in the Peach Bowl to decide which team will move onto the Cotton Bowl."

So does a team really go and hoist a trophy for the quarterfinals Rose bowl? That's like having a trophy ceremony for the divisional round of the playoffs.

So when do we expand to 16? Wildcards?

Hopefully before too long.

In just about every other sport’s postseason the mentality is usually “just get in.” About time this happens in football. I expect we’ll be there often.

Agreed. Eight would be perfect. Ten max IMO. Twelve is too many.
