Alabama head coach Nick Saban addressed the media on Monday at his weekly press conference to provide team updates and talk about the upcoming game between LSU and the Crimson Tide.

One thing the stuck out was when Saban called Matt Canada's pre-snap shifts "eye candy."

Oh Shift!-The damn Yellow Flag. Blame it on crowd noise. Shifting takes more time, communication, and discipline. Crowd noise will make that next to impossible. LSU Offense is the most penalized in the SEC, slowest, fewest Plays/Per game, and Plays per Minute = NO TEMPO. If you can't do it in TS you can't do it in Tuscaloosa.

Saban is just blowing smoke up Canada’s arse. I’m sure Nick is taking the shifts seriously.

This is where Canada starts the 1st half with one shift before the snap (not several) and runs the play; surprising a defense expecting multiple shifts. In the 2nd half, after getting a steady diet of one shift and snap, Canada goes back to several shifts and confuses the shite out of Saban's defense even more.

Window dressing on a vanilla offense. Nicky might throw a shutout.

The true hook is when Canada actually engages the pre-movement set up. It goes from benign motions to actual things to consider for the defense. As with everything offense related, the oline MUST provide a minimum level of time.......we can only hope.
user avatar
Saban's point isn't that the pre-snap motion is pointless and stupid, but rather that he wants his players to be focused on the formation and their assignments, and not worried about watching what guys are moving where. By that definition they are not eye candy.

No it isn't pointless. I will say this as well. If there is one thing I have noticed over the years that drives Saban nuts is a wheel route. Florida beat LSU with the wheel route over and over again in 2003. They were our only loss. I have watched Saban's defenses over the years and it is still true. I am hoping Matt Canada has seen this too.

It's not an insult like the tone of the title suggests. He's saying that the shifts can confuse the players and distract them from their assignments

It is distracting, but anyone who thinks it's purely eye candy is simply not watching closely enough... It's eye candy, until that moment when it isn't. The Patriots used a similar concept in the 2010 Super Bowl against the Ravens. People were critical of the zone blitz when Bill Arnsparger brought it to the pro-level. But then Dick Lebeau perfected and popularized it, and everyone raves about how great a d-coach Lebeau is. He is a great defensive coach. But Bill Arnsparger was 10 years ahead of Dick Lebeau. The 72 Dolphins defense wasn't too bad... As far as pre-snap motion is concerned, Canada is ahead of his time. We've got two really smart coordinators. It's fun to watch.

Sorry. It was 2015 in a divisional game against Baltimore. It was similar in that the point of the formation was to be deceptive. That's part of Canada's intent. LINK /

People will misconstrue what Saban is saying. He's a football coach speaking from a football coach's perspective. Of course pre-snap motions are "eye candy." What the hell else would they be? Saban's point isn't that the pre-snap motion is pointless and stupid, but rather that he wants his players to be focused on the formation and their assignments, and not worried about watching what guys are moving where.

Exactly. He’s the best coach for many reasons. He knows what to say and what not to say. Canada’s shifts will be more of a challenge than Bama’s D has had in 6 years! Saban knows this. Now just geaux kick their asses, Tigers!
