College Football Insider Bruce Feldman is reporting that USC defensive line coach Jamar Cain will be joining Brian Kelly's staff as defensive line coach and run game coordinator.

Cain, who was on Oklahoma's staff this past season, had been set to coach on Lincoln Riley's staff at USC. Prior to his time at Oklahoma, Cain was the defensive line coach at Arizona State in 2019.

Damn! He followed Riley to USC, then woke up and realized that he was at the wrong place. Welcome to LSU coach!

This is an excellent hire based on three things:

• He fits Coach Brian Kelly’s alignment,
• He can coach up the players from a technician perspective, and
• He is a great recruiter.

Another home run hire by Coach Brian Kelly.

Cain is Oklahoma’s newest assistant coach. He worked for Klieman for three seasons at North Dakota State. In his short time at OU, Cain has already gained acclaim as a dynamic and effective recruiter.

But Klieman wants everyone to know Cain’s not nearly as good as he says he is.

“He thinks he’s the best barbecue guy on any staff,” Klieman told SI Sooners. “Every year in the summer, we had a barbecue contest. Five or six coaches, we’d bring a bunch of boosters over, donors, and they were our judges. He finished in last place every year. … It was always a blind test, but he’d finish last.”

But, but Brian Kelly didn’t have his staff fully socialized 2 days in. Isn’t that still a catastrophe?

The program needed a reset. At least we know CBK is serious and hiring based on resumes and the big picture. Can't keep someone around just because of name or time spent here. Kelly is picking and choosing who he wants and I trust his judgement.

Very apparent many posters have never worked in upper management. Doesn't matter how good someone is if they are not in sync with the current leadership. The door is 'exit left'.

Was hoping we could snag Ed Orgeron for dline since he has LA roots, but this guy should be able to get the job done

Never heard of this guy. Did watch Andre Carter sack a lot of QBs in the NFL, so I suspect he knew what he was doing.

If you hadn't noticed, LSU is getting rid of all the "names". We don't need names, we need good coaches. Good technical coaches. Pairing techniques with the best talent will produce the best results.

Being good at something doesn’t mean you are good at teaching that.
