Over the past couple of weeks, LSU running back Derrius Guice has suggested that he might return to Baton Rouge next year for his senior season despite lofty first-round draft projections.

Guice plans to play in LSU's bowl game on Jan. 1 and said he will make his NFL Draft decision after the game.

On Tuesday, head coach Ed Orgeron met with the media and said Guice wants to finish the season strong and that he's not sure if the junior running back has made up his mind just yet about the NFL Draft.

Guice injured his knee in preseason camp and re-injured the knee vs. Mississippi State on September 16 but is 100-percent now, according to a recent Instagram post of his.

He finished the season with 1,153 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns despite missing the Troy game and had limited playing time in other games because of the injury.

I would love to see him back, although I don’t want to see him get hurt and miss out on a huge opportunity in the NFL. I really wish something was in place to encourage kids to come back and finish their degree and not worry about injury. I know Insurance policies provide protection. But not many of these kids or their families, can afford them. I would like to see the NCAA sponsor a policy and possibly partner with the NFL to pick up the premiums. This could also eliminate the debate about paying college athletes. Both would benefit from this.

Doesn't the school sometimes pay the insurance premiums? For some reason I thought LSU paid for Leonard's. Also, I could just be retarded.
user avatar
Lexman177 months
I don’t think they can, cas4t. That would probably be considered improper benefits, or whatever the NCAA chooses to call it.

Finish the season strong with your team and then go finish your dream. I don't have a problem with this because he plays for the team and the fans even when nicked up. The guy is doing things right and he will get his rewards soon with the NFL. He can always finish school on his time like many have done. Shaq comes to mind first. Thank you D.G. for all of the great memories!! A true tiger!!

Simple...get an insurance policy and come back for your senior season. He would go after the Heisman, try and beat Bama and be absolutely worshiped in Baton Rouge as well as the face of college football.

Instead of trying to be an attention whore by teasing the whole LSU community with the thought of him returning.

that insurance policy won't make up for the lost year of NFL revenue. Would be completely ignorant to return. He's probably just whoring for attention.

Do you have the details of such an insurance policy, airfernando? Plus, money isn't everything. For someone like me for example, $20 million would be the same as $5 million.

I give this a chance of happening about as much as Key playing in the bowl game. he's a first round pick there aint no way he's coming back .

Hes a first round pick next year too.
user avatar
JumpingTheShark77 months
@225Tyga that’s no guarantee whatsoever and the chances of getting injured are pretty damn high
user avatar
tigersbh77 months
The chances of injury is relatively high. The chances of a career ending injury is relatively low. He can always take out insurance for that. I'm glad he's in a position to do whatever he wants to do. He has earned it.

If Guice is leaving (I think he should) then he is handling this the right way. Be there for your team enjoy the process. Playing in the NFL and getting paid to play football is a huge honor. But you cant go back and be a Tiger. Enjoy it Derrius.

I don't think he will grade out as a first round pick. I think he will go 2nd or 3rd round. He comes back healthy next year I don't see why he can't make a run at the Heisman.

You’ve never seen a football player make money a different way? Is that what you’re saying?

Devil's Advocate here. If he returns and becomes the darling of LSU he is also set for life. He will always have security because the LSU family will support him and keep him employed. Thats not a bad place to be

Nobody ever admits this... Just like other star lsu players he will always have a good job because of lsu

He is already set for life, let that man go to the NFL.

It just wouldn't make any sense. I guess one could make an argument for a slim chance at Heisman and a good season with two new untested QBs.

He'd be a fool to come back. At his position, there's a limited shelf life. Every carry he takes in college shortens his pro career. RBs should never stay.
user avatar
Lexman177 months
Maybe he wants to come back and finish his degree. I don’t think that’s foolish.

You know it's ok for Peyton Manning, Eli, etal.. but Guice is a different story. If his goal is a degree to carry him past football and secure his place in NCAA history. I say come back. But, if his goal is to backup McCoy in Buffalo and make a 3 year 15 mil contract then do it. It's up to him!

He would start over McCoy by week 8 my man.. Bet

Key is projected at #9 pick. We know he’s gone. Guice, however, is projected at #24, and could slip to the 2nd rd., depending on how things go. There’s a huge difference in money between a top 12 pick and a 2nd rounder. Might be worth it to come back for his senior year and be a top 5 pick like Fournette. Best of luck either way, Derrius!
