The College Football Playoff weighed in on the ongoing battle over former professional athletes returning to college football on Friday, issuing a statement supporting conference rules that prohibit those players from returning.

The statement comes one day after a Louisiana judge granted a preliminary injunction that prevents the SEC and NCAA from punishing schools for adding players with previous professional ties, clearing a path for Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to join LSU’s roster.

CFP leaders did not announce any new eligibility or participation rules for the playoff on Friday, but made it clear that they support the conferences’ positions on the issue.

Here’s the full statement from the College Football Playoff:
quote:

“The CFP strongly supports the positions and rules of individual conferences concerning the return to college of athletes with professional draft, contract or roster ties. These conference rules are intended to protect the needs, interests and integrity of the sport.

“The CFP believes that certain clear rules should be followed so that individual institutions fielding FBS football teams know what will be expected of them, and so that the public can have full confidence in the competitive integrity of the sport.

“Given the ongoing legal proceedings, we will not have further comments on the matter at this time.”

I think that’s why they didn’t make a clear statement. CFP is giving themselves plenty of wiggle room if it gets to December.

Roster ties, clear rules. So, the Texas lineman puts UT's chance at a playoff in jeopardy? Just becasue the SEC screwed the pooch in their 5 for 5 decision doesn't make LSU or any other instiution wrong for following a court decision.

CFP can't tell LSU not to dress or play them. That would be unlawful as hell.

This is absolutely about equality for all college sports. If it takes burning it down then so be it. Rules? There’s no rules, only what the SEC decides when the wind blows south towards LA.

So. Is the the same CFP with such principles that they specifically gives Notre Dame the sweetest deal ever to guarantee them a spot every year? Don’t even talk to me about integrity!!

If only the NCAA made clear rules.

Good thing we don't have any former NFL players. Every "big school" college football player is a pro now so the proffessional vs. amateur argument is total bs.

I saw where Indiana just had like 6-7 rules eligible to return. I wonder if that changes everyone’s tune since it isn’t LSU.

That statement sounds like it came from the NCAA—“we’re going to make a statement but we’re not gonna get involved-you figure it out”

It seems like there's a lot at risk for these two men to play. I hope the Governor and Lane Kiffin can behave like they understand what's at stake, here. It goes way beyond "We're LSU and everyone else is against us."
