California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Monday that will allow amateur athletes at California colleges to profit off their name, likeness or image.

Head coach Ed Orgeron was asked about the subject later in the afternoon during his weekly press conference and said that he believes "players should get as much as they possibly can."
quote:

Q. Today, with California passing legislation for amateurs to make money off their likeness and amateurs, I know California being a footprint for you guys in recruiting and things like that, how do you see that influencing just the state of college football, and also from your perspective as a recruiter in a state that does not have such a bill?

COACH ORGERON: Just gotta follow the rules, whatever they tell us to do. I believe the players should get as much as they possibly can. And am I fan of paying the players, no. But I do -- if there's a system we can get these guys what they deserve without getting salaries, maybe cost of attendance like they are today and a little bit more, I'm all for that.

But I think it's got to be governed all in the right way. But that's not for me to decide. My job is to coach football, and whatever they tell me to do, I'm going to do.
Whats everyone's thought on this new bill?

I think schools get away with some things and likeness of players. But this will ruin college sports as we know it

Best answer he could have given. He's not nearly as stupid as people like to make him out to be.

I bet no colleges in California will have the players names on the back of their jersey anymore.

Some will take it a step more and the university marketing department will request un-issued jersey numbers to sell so no likeness issues.

This will open a can of worms. Any superstar would be a fool to not play in California. He could graduate a millionaire. Look for Alabama to immediately start their play for pay bill. They may be first, but every state will follow. They have no choice. Can the NCAA vetoe this? They set the rules, not the California governor.

He would be a fool to play in California cause he will not be eligible per NCAA rules. Do you think Bama ND MI OSU will lose recruits to California schools because they have different rules. Your crazy. California schools will need to start their own league.

@DeafVallyBatnR you would be a fool NOT to play in Cali. You are making money openly nothing under the table. And other 5 kids will be doing it at your school too. And you dont have to play in crappy Alabama or Indiana. You can do it in sunshine Cali. What teenager WOULDNT DO THAT.

LOVE coach O. Good lord, these are young men risking their bodies and working harder in one year than most of us do in 20 years. They absolutely deserve to get paid. Love coach O's honesty.

No one seems to be talking about the jealousy this might create in a locker room. Suppose there are a handful of guys making thousands upon thousands of dollars and throwing cash around like a Hurricane made of money. What will the other guys, who work just as hard and contribute in important ways going to think when they get nothing?

Not a single one should make more than a Private in the US Army. Those young men sacrifice far more than a football player.
