LSU signee Christian Cairo was all set to head to LSU but then everything changed on Tuesday.

Cairo, a shortstop from Calvary Christain in Clearwater, Fla, was meeting with head coach Paul Mainieri and scheduling his freshman year classes when he had to leave the room to take a phone call.

That phone call was the Cleveland Indians, who notified him that they were selected him in the fourth round of the MLB Draft and offering him a $955,000 signing bonus.

Cairo then came back into the room and told Mainieri that he was going pro.

Man it’s easy to judge but it’d be hard for me to turn down a million dollars to play baseball.

I don’t see how it’s easy to judge if you’re even saying you’d be conflicted

IF he did indeed lie to the coaches by telling them one number then bolting when its considerably less, I'm going to judge him a little.

I thought he’d stick. I don’t think he come’s from a tough financial situation, his dads Miguel Cairo but maybe he just wants to be a pro. Good luck to the kid!

Moran’s tweet makes it sound like LSU offered him “considerably” more

I doubt the money had much to do with it. His dad isn't broke, unless he made some stupid decisions with the money he made in the MLB. And after taxes that's more like 575 grand. Yes, a lot of money, but not exactly a nest egg one can live off for more that 10 years. I mean, if he doesn't make it he has nothing to fall back on. I'd of stuck to my guns like Hampton. He set a number and told them match it or I'm going to school. They couldn't match it. In 3 or 4 years he will be making 3 or 4 times what he was offered to turn pro yesterday. I think Cairo just wanted to get his pro baseball career going.

He can always go to school afterwards if he manages his finances just decently. The idea someone should skip an offer like that for the college is ridiculous. Anyone could get injured as a freshman and their athletic career be over.

I mean to be fair...MLB level hitting instruction or Sean Ochinko. Who you gonna roll the dice with?

Or thumbing around the minors for 4 years or college for 3 and a year in the minors if your talent level is where they think you are.

We pulled his offer when he couldn’t bench due to lack of CHEST

This situation year after year is, I guess, a good problem in that we attract such great recruits, but it must drive Mainieri crazy.

How could this be a bad decision? He can easily pay his way through college with that $955,000 signing bonus.

So you have to recruit good...but not too good. Or all your kids will go pro before they start class. Sheesh.

Obviously, he wants to play baseball without the burden of attending classes. Time will tell if it was a prudent or foolish decision.

$955,000 he can always come back to college not to play baseball), he's signing for more than most graduates will make in the first 20 years of work.
