LSU head coach Paul Mainieri announced Thursday that freshman pitcher Eric Walker will miss the 2018 season due to a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow that will require surgery. Per LSUSports.net:

Walker, a product of Arlington, Texas, helped lead LSU to the 2017 Southeastern Conference championship and a berth in the College World Series, where the Tigers finished as the national runners-up. He is scheduled to have Tommy John surgery next Wednesday in Arlington, where it will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister, the head team physician of the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball club.

“Obviously, the news on Eric’s elbow is very disheartening,” Mainieri said. “First of all, my heart bleeds for Eric as this is not the conclusion to a wonderful freshman year that any of us envisioned. Eric was a rock all year in our weekend rotation and a vital contributor to our SEC Championship, as well as our appearance in the College World Series.

8+ years ago this would have been much worse news. Obviously he won't be available next season which sucks pretty bad, but given how much TJ surgery has advanced over the years, odds are we're going to get an even better walker the following season. And really as the tiger faithful, his future should take precedence over our hopes for a single season. Just my two cents

It sucks that he'll miss next year but he should come back stronger than ever. Nothing but good things ahead for this kid.

Damn! Sometimes bad things happen to good people and you just have to move forward. I think Eric will meet this challenge head on and be back better than ever in 2019. Best of luck Eric! You can do it!

They'll probably surprise us but next year's expectations should be a little less than stellar. Wishing Walker the best with his surgery.

Well shite on this Thursday now this almost forces Hess into a starter role now rather than the possibility a couple guys stepping up in the offseason and leaving him to be our closer.

Hate to hear this, but I am not surprised at all based on the way it all played out.

Seems these days forearm tightness almost exclusively means TJ. Oh well 2018 will be tough, but he'll be much stronger in his elbow after. Might see an uptick in velocity, I saw a mlb pic a year or so ago that TJ surgery had gotten so advanced that elbows are stronger than before and some see 1-2 mph increase in avg fastball speed.
