Imagine minding your own business on your 250 acre farm in the hollows of Mississippi and these people show up to burn you out take your goods rape your women

Grandfather and 4 of his brothers fought for the south.(8 did not) young and had to run the farm.

Another caused a family rift that still carries on to this date because I asked my grandfather if we were kin to a certain set of people he said yeah we are kin to the son of bytches
He was with the 37th ms and it became the 34th Mississippi andcaptured at “the battle above the clouds” look out mountain sent to Rock Island Il as a pow volunteered to go west to fight Indians he became what they call a galvanized Yankee and was spurned from the family when he got home(I often wonder what I would have done in that situation watching everyone around you die)get out go fight in the open air and die.
Grandfather and his other brother were in the 34th were not captured they fought Perryville chickamauga Chattanooga for their service they were then part of the Atlanta campaign and ended up surrendering in North Carolina and made it back to Mississippi

I was in desert storm stationed for a bit Africa and the balkans
Dad was in nam
His dad was at Guadalcanal to Japan
His dad was an original devil dog at belleauwood during ww1

I say all this not to brag but to tell you when we would discuss before folks started dies off during my time and their time despite all the hardships the younger generation faced ww1 and on we always to the man said the civil war was one they would most dread fighting in!
