Need some advice here. We’re buying a house that has the range top in the island in the center of the kitchen. It’s an electric range, so I don’t have to worry about gas ventilation, but I’m not sure how these folks have been getting by with no exhaust while cooking. Complicating things is that the kitchen is on the first floor, below a bedroom upstairs. I would much prefer to vent outside, but I’m not sure that’s going to be possible.

How difficult of a job am I looking at? Are there other viable options?

Downdraft

We have this downdraft and it works fine. Not as good as a hood, but does the job.

You would need room in the island for the unit, countertop will need to be cut, and the duct and vent installed. Can probably work through basement ceiling.

And that vents outside? I saw some that recirculated, but I’m not really interested in having to regularly change filters, especially if it doesn’t work as well.

It’s really simple, do you have the space to run a duct? Are you willing to give up the space to run a duct? If not recirculating with a filter.

The broan range hood I installed is dual use…works either ducted or ductless you just remove a panel at the top for the duct and use a different filter

Mine vents outside through the kitchen floor, but you will have to have the ducts installed.

I have had downdraft in the old house and have it in the current one. They suck balls. Now with electric probably not as bad as with gas. fricks up the flame and most of my pots are higher than the unit
