Planning a summer trip to Yellowstone/Montana and trying to decide amount of time and itinerary. Will have 10-12 days in the area not including flights. Two adults and two kids ages 8 & 11. Have never been to glacier and will be staying in Big Sky for at least a few days, so thinking we should drive up and see it. Should we scrap Teton and just do Yellowstone and Glacier? Appreciate any help here.

Glacier is a long way from Yellowstone/Big Sky. Not sure if you are aware of that. Definitely doable, just not as close as Teton/Yellowstone.

I did Yellowstone/Teton/Jackson over 7 days with the family last May.

I don't know much about Glacier, other than several of the major roads remain closed well into June/July. I would love to get back out there soon.

We are leaving from BR May 20th heading to Gardiner, MT (3 Day Drive)and will do yellowstone for 5 days and travel 1 day to St. Mary and spend 5 days around Glacier. Travel home in 4 days making a stop at Mt. Rushmore on the way home. 17 day trip.

The only bad thing is that we will only be able to access part of Glacier due to Road to the Sun not being fully open until the end of June most likely, but this is the only time we have to get away for that long. We will be in a motorhome 2 adults and 4 kids.

I did this trip. I'm at work, but I'll try to piece together some details.

Here's the overview
- Flew into Helena
- Drove to Bozeman for the night
- Drove to Yellowstone next morning and started seeing the sights.
- We spent a few nights in Yellowstone at the lodges at Lake Yellowstone.
- One of the days we drove down into Jackson Hole and saw the Tetons along that way.
- We checked out of the lodge and drove around Yellowstone for the better part of the day seeing more sights.

- Drove up to Bozeman from West Yellowstone and through Big Sky.

- Bozeman to Louis and Clark Caverns
- Caverns to Missoula for the night
- Missoula to Lake Apgar (in Glacier) for a few nights
- A few days of driving around Glacier. We were there in the first half of June and the Going to the sun road was not fully opened. We had to go 1/3 in and then the long way around, and 1/3 in from the other side.

Then out through Grand Forks for a night, and back out to Helena the next day to fly out. I think we spent 7-8 days total including travel. This is traveling with kids who were 5 and 7 at the time.

Don't miss Grand Teton.

We did Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Big Sky last summer (family of four: me, my wife and 2 college age daughters) flying in and out of Jackson Hole. All four of us were in agreement that we liked Grand Teton better than Yellowstone. The mountains are more impressive, the trails are more interesting, it was less crowded and just in general it was more scenic. You also have the opportunity for rafting the Snake River, which a lot of people like.

Now, don't get me wrong, you shouldn't miss Yellowstone either, with its wildlife, geysers, canyons and even the neat architecture of the old lodge. But the two parks are essentially right next to each other; it would be foolish to do one and not the other while you are there.

Big Sky, to me, is overrated, especially in the summer. Mainly a ski resort with a new bougie/Gucci little downtown. Only reason we went and stayed there one night was because of my selfie generation daughters. I can't possibly see the point of staying there "a few days".

As the other posters have pointed out, it's a LONG drive up to Glacier from Yellowstone -- 9.5 hours from Old Faithful to Going to the Sun Mountain; 6 hours if you leave from Big Sky.

Our trip was 10 days, including flights, so if you want you could add in Glacier. You have to consider flights, and rental cars, though-- your best bet to limit your driving time on such a spread-out trip is to fly into one airport to start your trip then out another-- say, fly into Jackson Hole, then fly out of Glacier Park Int'l/Kalispell (or vice-versa). You can get a one-way rental car when you do this-- pick it up at the first airport and drop it off at the second.

I think you would have time to do Glacier also. Going at this time of year the Going to the Sun road in Glacier should be open. I went in late May in 2019 and the Sun road was still closed due to snow. Honestly, between Tetons, Yellowstone and Glacier, I think Yellowstone was my least favorite.

Agree with all of this. We did Yellowstone too, but if I was going again, I'd spend all my time in Grand Teton.

Jackson Hole is one of the most unique airports you could fly into. Literally in a national park with car rental on site. Agree with previous that Tetons>>Yellowstone and GNP>Yellowstone. Jackson is a great little town as is Kalispell.
